How to use AQA A-Level Law flashcards in revision

Most AQA A-Level Law revision comes down to remembering authorities and definitions accurately, from the neighbour principle in negligence to the rules on offer and acceptance in contract. AQA A-Level Law flashcards work well for this because each card asks you to retrieve one point on its own, and the repetition builds the recall you need under exam conditions.

  • Write the case name on one side and the principle it established on the other, then test yourself without looking.
  • Keep definitions such as actus reus and mens rea on their own cards so you can recall them quickly in essay answers.
  • Review a small set each day rather than cramming a whole topic the night before.
  • Check each card against your notes, since accurate case facts and wording matter more than a quick summary.
Example A-Level Law AQA flashcards on key cases
What is the neighbour principle from Donoghue v Stevenson (1932)?A duty of care is owed to people who are so closely and directly affected by your actions that you ought reasonably to have them in mind when acting. This is the basis for the modern tort of negligence.
When is acceptance by post effective under the postal rule?Acceptance by post takes effect when the letter is posted, not when it is received, as set out in Adams v Lindsell (1818). The rule can be excluded by the terms of the offer.
What is ratio decidendi? The legal principle from a case that is necessary to the decision and binds lower courts. Statements that are not necessary to the decision are obiter dicta and are not binding.
What did Woolmington v DPP (1935) establish? The prosecution must prove the defendant's guilt beyond reasonable doubt, giving rise to the golden thread principle. Exceptions include insanity and some statutory reverse burdens.
What is Dicey's doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty?Parliament can make or unmake any law, and no other body can override an Act of Parliament. Dicey also held that one Parliament cannot bind a future Parliament.

Cases and principles

Flashcards pull out the case name, the facts that matter and the principle it established, so you can recall both the authority and what it decides.

Spaced repetition

Cards you find difficult come back sooner, and the ones you know come back less often, which suits the long list of cases you need to hold in memory.

Works from your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX files, slides, notes or photos of pages. The cards come from your own course material, not a generic law list.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, Word document, slide deck, plain text notes or a photo of a page from your AQA A-Level Law course.

Review the generated cards

Check the flashcards against your notes, edit any wording you want to change, and remove anything you do not need.

Study with spaced repetition

Work through your daily review set in the browser. The schedule adjusts to how well you recall each card.

DeckOwl builds these cards from the material you already have. Upload your teacher's notes, your textbook chapter or a set of slides, and the generator writes question-and-answer cards for the key cases, statutes and terms. You can then study them in the browser on the free plan, and paid plans add export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV so you can keep your cards outside the app.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for A-Level Law?

Start with one set per topic or unit, usually somewhere between 20 and 50 cards, so each set is manageable to review. Add more as you cover new cases and statutes, and keep older sets in rotation so earlier material stays fresh.

What should an A-Level Law flashcard include?

Each card should test one point, such as a case name with its principle, a legal definition, or the rule from a statute. Avoid long paragraphs on the front, and write the back in your own words so you can check whether you actually understand it.

Is DeckOwl free to use?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Exporting to PDF, DOCX, Anki or CSV requires a paid plan, and a student school email gets 40% off.

Can I export my A-Level Law flashcards?

Exporting is a paid feature. The Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, along with unlimited generations and spaced repetition.
