Why generate your own abacus flashcards

A printable abacus card set shows bead values, but it cannot match the soroban or suanpan your class uses or the exact steps on your exam. Free abacus flashcards made from your own notes cover your course's terms and examples.

  • Upload slides, notes or photos instead of searching for a generic printable set.
  • Review cards in spaced intervals so you retain bead values and calculation steps.
  • Use the free plan to study in the browser with no credit card.
  • Export to PDF, DOCX, Anki or CSV on Plus if you want to print or move your deck.
Example abacus flashcards for soroban practice
What is a soroban?A Japanese abacus with one heaven bead above the beam and four earth beads below, used for decimal arithmetic.
What is the value of each heaven bead on a soroban?Five. Each earth bead is worth one, so moving a heaven bead down counts as five.
How is zero shown on a soroban rod?All beads on that rod are moved away from the beam, so none is counted.
How many heaven and earth beads does a Chinese suanpan have per rod?Two heaven beads and five earth beads. The heaven beads are worth five each and the earth beads one each.
What does the beam on an abacus do?It separates the heaven beads from the earth beads, and a bead counts only when it is pushed against the beam.

Built from your material

Upload your teacher's abacus handout, a slide deck or a photo of your textbook page and get cards that match what your class covers.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so bead values and soroban steps stick without rereading the same page.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you study right away with no download. Exports to PDF, DOCX and Anki are on Plus.

How it works

Add your source

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or a photo of a page. Text in images is read automatically.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl turns the material into flashcards. You can also create quizzes or a mind map from the same notes.

Study and review

Work through the deck in your browser. Spaced repetition schedules the cards you find hard more often.

Start with the source you already have. A lecture slide on bead values or a photo of a worked addition becomes a deck of questions and answers, and you can edit cards before you study.

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study. Plus, at $7.99 a month or $39 a year, removes the generation limit and adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for abacus practice?

Start with one card per bead value, rod position and basic operation, which usually means 20 to 40 cards for a first unit. Add cards for each new technique as your course moves on, and keep each card to one idea.

What is the difference between a soroban and a suanpan?

A soroban has one heaven bead and four earth beads per rod, while a suanpan has two heaven beads and five earth beads. Check which version your class uses before you make your cards.

Can I download a free abacus flashcard set?

The free plan lets you generate and study flashcards in your browser, but file exports are not included. PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export are available on Plus.

Is there a discount for students?

Students with a school email get 40% off Plus, and you can start without a credit card.
