Turn a photo of an alphabet chart into big ABC flashcards

Printed alphabet cards are fine until you need a different layout or a specific set of letters. DeckOwl builds flashcards from your own letter sheets, slides or notes, then schedules reviews with spaced repetition.

How to make your own big ABC flashcards

Many families and teachers search for big ABC flashcards because young learners respond well to large letters paired with a clear picture. A ready-made set may not match the font, the picture words or the uppercase and lowercase pairs you are teaching, so making your own from the material you already have is often more useful.

  • Cover a few letters per session rather than the whole alphabet at once.
  • Pair each uppercase letter with a familiar picture word, such as Apple for A.
  • Mix in lowercase letters after the child can name the capital form reliably.
  • Review the deck regularly so spaced repetition can focus on the letters that need work.
Example alphabet flashcards for early readers

Lowercase form of uppercase G?g, which has a tail that drops below the baseline.
Picture word that starts with K?Kite, a common pairing for the letter K.

Starts from your material

Upload a PDF, slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a letter chart. Text recognition reads printed pages, so you are not limited to ready-made sets.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know fade into longer gaps, so letters stick without daily drilling.

Print or export when you upgrade

Plus includes PDF export for printing and Anki and CSV export for other apps. The free plan studies in the browser.

How it works

Upload your letter source

Add a PDF, a photo of an alphabet poster, or a list you typed out.

Review the generated cards

Check the letter, picture cue and answer on each card, and edit anything that does not match what you want to teach.

Study in short sessions

Open the deck in your browser and let spaced repetition choose which letters need another pass.

Start with the chart or worksheet your child already uses. Photograph it, upload it, and DeckOwl will generate cards that pair each letter with its word and sound. You can then keep the uppercase and lowercase forms together, or split them into separate drills.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters should a child learn in one session?

Short sessions with a few letters work better than long ones for most young learners. Stop when attention drops and return to the same letters the next day.

Should I teach uppercase and lowercase letters together?

Many teachers introduce uppercase first, then pair each one with its lowercase form once it is recognized. Your deck can be organized either way.

Can I print the flashcards?

Yes, on the Plus plan, which includes PDF export. Plus costs $39/year or $7.99/month, and the free plan studies in the browser only.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month and no credit card. Students with a school email get 40% off paid plans.
