Why doubles facts make a good starting point

Doubles facts like 7 + 7 and 8 + 8 are often the first sums students memorize, and addition doubles flashcards give them a quick way to drill those pairs until recall is automatic. Once a child knows the doubles, near-doubles such as 6 + 7 become much easier to work out.

  • Start with doubles from 1 + 1 through 5 + 5, then move up to 10 + 10.
  • Keep sessions to about ten minutes so accuracy stays high.
  • Say the answer and the doubling reason out loud, such as 6 + 6 = 2 × 6 = 12.
  • Review missed cards the same day before moving on to new facts.
Example addition doubles flashcards for grade 1
What is 4 + 4?8. Doubles facts add a number to itself, so 4 + 4 = 2 × 4 = 8.
What is 7 + 7?14. Think of 7 + 7 as two groups of 7, which makes 14.
What is 9 + 9?18. Doubling 9 gives 18, and a check is 10 + 10 − 2 = 18.
What is 6 + 6?12. Two sixes make twelve, a fact that is often memorized directly.
What is 6 + 7?13. Doubles plus one: 6 + 6 = 12, then add 1 to get 13.

Upload a PDF, slide deck, Word file, plain notes or a photo of a worksheet, and the text is pulled out for flashcards.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know come back later, so doubles facts stick without endless repetition.

Study in the browser

Practice on a phone, tablet or laptop. The free plan lets you study right away with no credit card.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a worksheet, class notes or a photo of the page that lists the doubles facts your child is learning.

Review the cards

Check the generated questions and answers, and edit any card that does not match what your class covered.

Practice a few minutes a day

Study short sessions on schedule so the answers come back fast and without counting on fingers.

If your class already has a printed sheet, you can turn that sheet into a set of cards that matches the exact problems your child is seeing. Generating from your own material keeps the cards aligned with what was taught, and spaced review helps the facts last past the next test.

Frequently asked questions

Which doubles facts should a child learn first?

Most teachers start with 1 + 1 through 5 + 5 and then move to 6 + 6 through 10 + 10. Once those are automatic, doubles plus one, such as 6 + 7, becomes easy to add.

How many doubles flashcards should a child practice per session?

Ten to fifteen cards in a short session, practiced a few times a week, is a common routine for early elementary students. Short sessions help keep accuracy high.

Can I export the cards to Anki or print them?

Exporting to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV is a Plus feature, and the free plan lets you study in the browser without exports. Printing is possible by exporting to PDF on Plus.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month and no credit card. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
