Custom addition flash cards from your own material

Printable sheets of addition flash cards with answers on back are easy to find, but they rarely match the problems your teacher actually assigned.

  • Put one problem on each front, such as 7 + 8
  • Write only the sum on the back so recall is quick
  • Shuffle the deck instead of drilling one row in order
  • Spend more time on missed cards than on the ones you already know
Example addition flash cards for early elementary math
9 + 514
Is 3 + 9 the same as 9 + 3?Yes. Addends can be swapped without changing the sum, so one fact gives you two.
8 + 715. Think 8 + 2 = 10, then add the remaining 5 to get 15.
Make a ten: 6 + 915. Move 1 from the 6 to the 9 to make 10 + 5, which is 15.
6 + 612. This is a double, one of the first addition facts to memorize.

Reads your worksheets

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or a photo of a page, and the text is pulled out for you.

Answers on the back

Each card puts the problem on the front and the correct sum on the back, so you can check yourself right away.

Study in the browser

The free plan includes three generations a month and browser study. Plus adds exports and spaced repetition.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slide deck, notes, or a photo of a page that has the addition problems on it.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl builds flashcards from the problems, with the answer on the back of each card.

Flip and review

Study the cards in your browser and spend extra time on the ones you miss.

A deck made from your own worksheet or notes keeps the same numbers and formats you practice in class. Upload the file, and each problem becomes a front with its answer on the back.

Mix the cards up rather than working through one row in order. Shuffling helps you recall each sum on its own, which is the skill a quiz tests.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make addition flash cards with answers on the back by hand?

Write one problem on the front of each card, such as 9 + 5, and the sum on the back, such as 14. Keep each card to a single fact so you can check yourself quickly.

Which addition facts should kids learn first?

Most early math programs start with doubles like 4 + 4 and facts that make 10, such as 6 + 4. Once those are automatic, practice sums to 20 in mixed order.

Can I export my addition flashcards?

The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports. PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV export are part of Plus, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No credit card is needed to start on the free plan, which includes three generations per month. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
