Why custom cards beat a ready-made sheet

Ready-made sheets are easy to find, but the most useful addition with regrouping flashcards are built from the problems your class is actually working on. Carrying ones and tens is a multi-step routine, and students often know the answer to one problem but stumble on the next because the numbers changed.

  • Write the full carrying routine on the back of each card, one column at a time.
  • Mix problems that need no carry with ones that need one or two carries.
  • Include a few estimate cards so students check whether an answer is reasonable.
  • Review missed cards before new ones, and keep sessions short and frequent.
Example addition with regrouping flashcards for grade 2
47 + 35 = ?82. Ones: 7 + 5 = 12, write 2 and carry 1 ten. Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8.
Why do you carry the 1 in 38 + 25?Because 8 + 5 = 13 ones, which is 1 ten and 3 ones, so the 1 ten moves to the tens column.
256 + 189 = ?445. Ones: 6 + 9 = 15, write 5 and carry 1. Tens: 5 + 8 + 1 = 14, write 4 and carry 1. Hundreds: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4.
Estimate 62 + 49 before calculating.About 110, since 60 + 50 = 110, and the exact answer of 111 should be close to that estimate.
A student writes 36 + 27 = 53. What went wrong? The ones were added correctly, but the carried ten was left out of the tens column. The correct answer is 63.

Built from your own problems

Upload the worksheet or textbook pages your teacher uses, and the flashcards match the exact numbers and steps on them.

Photos work too

Snap a picture of a page and text recognition reads it, so you do not need a file or a scanner.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know fade into longer gaps, so carrying steps stick.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a regrouping worksheet.

Generate your flashcards

DeckOwl turns the problems and worked steps into question and answer cards.

Practice a little each day

Review the deck in your browser, and let spaced repetition choose what comes back next.

Start with two-digit problems where only the ones column needs a carry, then move to cards that carry into the hundreds. Put the worked steps on the back of each card so the card teaches the routine, not just the final number.

DeckOwl reads your own material and writes the cards from it, so the practice matches what will appear on your next quiz.

Frequently asked questions

How do I teach regrouping in addition so it sticks?

Have students say the place value out loud, such as seven ones plus five ones makes twelve ones, or one ten and two ones. Practice the same routine across several problems before adding a third digit.

What order should flashcards follow for two-digit addition with carrying?

Start with problems where the ones add to ten or more, then move to tens that carry into the hundreds. Save mixed problems with zeros in the tens place for the final review round.

Can I export these flashcards?

Exports are a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, while the free plan lets you study in the browser only.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start without a credit card, and the free plan includes 3 generations per month.
