Why build your own alphabet flash cards for NZ

Ready-made printable sets are easy to find, but alphabet flash cards made from your own lesson notes or worksheet photos match what your child or class is actually learning, including the Māori letters taught in many New Zealand schools.

  • Upload your own sheets or photos instead of printing a generic set
  • Cards cover both the English alphabet and any Māori letters in your material
  • Spaced repetition shows weaker letters more often
  • Free plan studies in the browser; Plus adds PDF export for printing
Example alphabet flashcards for NZ learners
Which letters are in the Māori alphabet?a, e, h, i, k, m, n, o, p, r, t, u, w, ng and wh, with ng and wh each counted as one letter.
What does a macron (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū) show in Māori?A long vowel sound. The length can change the meaning of a word, so the macron belongs on the card.
Which English letters are not used in the Māori alphabet?b, c, d, f, g, j, l, q, s, v, x, y and z. Māori uses only the letters a, e, h, i, k, m, n, o, p, r, t, u and w, plus ng and wh.
What are the two digraphs in the Māori alphabet?ng and wh. Each is pronounced as one sound and is treated as a single letter in the 15-letter alphabet.
How do most New Zealanders say the letter Z?Zed, as in British English, rather than zee as in American English.

How it works

Upload your material

Add the alphabet sheet, lesson slides or notes you already have, including photos taken at school.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl creates question and answer cards from the content, which you can review before studying.

Study with spacing

Review each day and let spaced repetition bring back the letters you are most likely to forget.

The Māori alphabet has 15 letters: a, e, h, i, k, m, n, o, p, r, t, u, w, ng and wh, with ng and wh each counted as one letter. Five vowels carry macrons (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū) that mark a long sound, so a card that shows the macron teaches pronunciation as well as spelling.

Many NZ learners also need the English alphabet, which lacks none of the Māori letters but adds b, c, d, f, g, j, l, q, s, v, x, y and z. Putting both sets on separate cards lets you check each one on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Which letters make up the Māori alphabet?

The Māori alphabet has 15 letters: a, e, h, i, k, m, n, o, p, r, t, u, w, ng and wh. The digraphs ng and wh are treated as single letters.

How long should a child practise alphabet flashcards each day?

Short daily sessions of a few minutes usually work better than one long session. Keep sessions brief and consistent so letters are repeated over several days.

Is DeckOwl free to use?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, with no exports. Plus adds unlimited generations along with PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Printing needs a PDF export, which is part of the Plus plan. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser without exporting them.
