Why custom letter cards beat generic printables

Printable coloring pages are everywhere, but alphabet flashcards to color work best when they match the letters your child is learning right now.

  • Start with the letters from your classroom chart or homework.
  • Pair each letter with a color word that begins with it.
  • Study in the browser on the free plan, with no exports.
  • Export to PDF or CSV on Plus when you want to print or color cards.

How it works

Add your letters

Upload a PDF, a photo of a letter chart, or a plain text list of letters and color words.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl builds question and answer cards from your material in a few moments.

Study or print

Practice in the browser for free, or export a printable set on the Plus plan.

A generic sheet shows every letter at once. Cards built from your own list let you start with four or five new letters, pair each with a color word, and add more only when the earlier ones are familiar.

Spaced repetition then brings back the letters that need more practice, so the activity stays short and useful.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters should a flashcard set cover at once?

Most early readers do better with a small group of four to six new letters, then mixing in earlier ones. Smaller sets make it easier to notice which letters need more practice.

Should a child color the card or say the word aloud?

Both work well together. Saying the letter and color word out loud while coloring the matching picture reinforces the sound and the shape at the same time.

Can I print my flashcards to color?

Printing needs an export, and PDF export is included in the Plus plan. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser without exports.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start on the free plan with no credit card, which includes 3 generations per month. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
