How AI-enhanced Anki flashcards get made

Most people who study with Anki spend more time typing cards than reviewing them. AI-enhanced Anki flashcards start from the material you already have: upload a lecture PDF, a slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a textbook page, and DeckOwl drafts question-and-answer cards you can edit before studying.

  • Flashcards drafted from PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, text notes and images
  • Spaced repetition scheduling for every deck
  • Edit, merge or delete generated cards before you study
  • Export to Anki, CSV, PDF or DOCX on the Plus plan
Example cell biology flashcards for Anki review
What is the function of the mitochondrion? It produces most of the cell's ATP through cellular respiration.
Which organelle modifies, sorts and packages proteins? The Golgi apparatus, which packages proteins into vesicles for transport.
What is the role of the nucleolus? It assembles ribosomal subunits from rRNA and ribosomal proteins.
How does passive diffusion differ from active transport?Passive diffusion moves substances down a concentration gradient without energy, while active transport uses ATP to move them against it.
What is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?Mitosis produces two identical diploid cells, while meiosis produces four genetically varied haploid cells.

Starts from your material

Upload a lecture PDF, a slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a page. Text is read from each source and turned into question-and-answer cards.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know are spaced further apart, so review time goes toward what you are forgetting.

Edit before you study

Rewrite any card, delete the ones that repeat, and add your own. The deck reflects your course, not a generic template.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or image of a textbook page to a new deck.

Review the draft cards

Check the generated questions and answers, fix anything unclear, and remove weak cards.

Study and export

Study in the browser on the free plan. On Plus, export the deck to Anki, CSV, PDF or DOCX.

Cards are scheduled with spaced repetition, so the ones you miss come back sooner. Free accounts get 3 generations a month and study in the browser. Plus adds unlimited generations and export to Anki, CSV, PDF and DOCX for $99.90 a year or $9.99 a month.

Frequently asked questions

How many ideas should one flashcard cover?

Keep each card to one fact or one relationship between two facts. A card that needs a long paragraph to answer is harder to recall, so split it into several cards.

How do I make flashcards from lecture notes more effective?

Write questions that force recall rather than recognition, and avoid copying whole sentences onto the back. Review the cards you get wrong more often than the ones you already know.

Can I export DeckOwl flashcards to Anki?

Yes, on the Plus plan, which also includes CSV, PDF and DOCX export. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month without adding a card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
