How people color-code Anki decks

Color coding is the usual answer to questions about Anki deck colors, because a large collection is easier to scan when each topic has a clear visual marker.

  • Use one flag color per topic so you can scan the browser quickly.
  • Keep the number of colors small, since too many colors are hard to remember.
  • Tag cards by unit or chapter in addition to coloring them.
  • Review colored groups separately to see which topics need more practice.
Example color theory flashcards for art students
What are the three primary colors in traditional RYB color theory?Red, yellow and blue.
What color is the complement of green on the RYB color wheel?Red, which sits opposite green on the wheel.
What happens when you mix red and yellow? You get orange, a secondary color.
What is saturation in color? The intensity or purity of a color; low saturation looks grayer.
What is a tint?A color mixed with white, which makes it lighter.

Flashcards from your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or images of pages, and get flashcards built from your own content.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back at the intervals your memory needs, so colored groups stay useful as your deck grows.

Export to Anki on Plus

Plus exports PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV files, so your generated cards can join the decks you already use.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slide deck, text notes or a photo of a page to start a new set.

Review the generated cards

Check the flashcards for accuracy, then group them by topic or subject.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the Free plan, or export to Anki on Plus and sort the cards into colored decks.

Anki's card flags come in red, orange, green, blue, pink, turquoise and purple, and you can set them from the browser or during review. Tags and deck names are the other common ways to group cards, and deck colors beyond those usually come from add-ons.

Color-coded decks work best when each color stands for one topic, so start with a few categories and keep the list short. DeckOwl can generate the cards from your own notes, and you can sort them into those groups before you study.

Frequently asked questions

How many color theory flashcards should I make before an art exam?

There is no fixed number, so focus on the terms you keep missing, such as hue, value, saturation and the color wheel. Review them daily in short sessions, since spaced repetition works better than one long cram.

What is the difference between a tint and a shade?

A tint is a color mixed with white, which makes it lighter, while a shade is a color mixed with black, which makes it darker. Practicing both with flashcards helps you name colors correctly on exams.

Can I export my colored flashcards to Anki with DeckOwl?

Anki export is included in the Plus plan, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month. The Free plan lets you study generated flashcards in the browser, with 3 generations per month.

Does DeckOwl need a credit card to start?

No, you can start without a credit card. Students get 40% off with a school email.
