Why build your own Hangul deck

Many Anki decks for Hangul are shared online, but a ready-made list rarely matches the romanization, fonts, or sample words in your own textbook or class handout.

  • Letter shapes paired with their sounds, so you can read a sign or menu
  • Syllable blocks broken into their jamo, showing how the letters combine
  • Vocabulary cards from your own word lists or textbook units
  • Quiz questions with explanations to check your reading before a test

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so the letters and syllables that give you trouble get more practice.

Anki export on Plus

Plus ($39/year or $7.99/month) exports your Hangul cards to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, image of a chart, DOCX, slides or plain notes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Review the generated cards

Check the letters, sounds and vocabulary DeckOwl pulled out, and edit anything that does not match your class.

Study or export

Study with spaced repetition in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki on Plus.

A better starting point is your own material. Photograph a Hangul chart or upload your lecture slides, and DeckOwl reads the text and turns each letter, syllable and vocabulary word into a flashcard.

Start with consonants and vowels, then move to syllable blocks and short words, reviewing daily so spaced repetition brings back the letters you miss.

Frequently asked questions

How many Hangul characters should I learn first?

Most beginners start with the 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels, then add the double consonants and compound vowels. Learning the shapes and sounds before full words makes the rest easier.

How do I study Hangul with flashcards effectively?

Drill letter shapes and their sounds separately, then move to syllable blocks and short words. Review a little every day so spaced repetition can schedule the harder cards more often.

Do I need a pre-made Anki deck for Hangul?

No. You can upload a photo of your chart, textbook page or notes, and DeckOwl generates flashcards from that material. This keeps the cards aligned with what your class actually teaches.

Can I export my Hangul cards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included in the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser, but exports are not included.
