How the settings shape your study time

The Anki deck settings that matter most are new cards per day, maximum reviews per day, learning steps and the ease factor, because together they decide how much work lands on you each day. A high new-card limit feels productive until the review queue grows faster than you can clear it.

  • Keep new cards per day low enough that your review queue stays under control.
  • Change one setting at a time so you can see what actually improved recall.
  • Use short learning steps for hard material and longer ones for familiar topics.
  • Build cards from your own notes so the deck reflects what your course actually tests.
Example Anki deck settings and what they control
What does the New cards/day setting control? The maximum number of new cards Anki introduces each day. The default is 20.
What does the Maximum reviews/day setting limit? The number of review cards shown each day. The default is 200, and extra reviews wait until the next day.
What are Anki's default learning steps?1 minute and 10 minutes. A card must pass each step before it graduates to a review interval.
What is the Graduating interval in Anki? The number of days until a learning card first becomes a review card. The default is 1 day.
What is the Leech threshold in Anki? The number of lapses, or forgotten reviews, before a card is flagged as a leech. The default is 8.

Own-material flashcards

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page and get flashcards built from that exact material.

Spaced repetition

Cards return on a schedule that adapts to how well you recall them, so review time goes where it is needed.

Export to Anki on Plus

Plus includes Anki export, so your generated cards can load into the deck settings you already use.

How it works

Upload your material

Add lecture slides, a textbook chapter or your typed notes. The free plan allows 3 generations per month.

Review and adjust

Check the generated cards, remove anything off-target and keep the ones that match your course.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki with Plus and set your deck limits there.

Start with Anki's defaults, watch your daily load for a week, then adjust one setting at a time. Lower the new-card limit if reviews pile up, and lengthen learning steps if you forget cards soon after they graduate. Good flashcards make these settings easier to tune because each card tests one clear idea.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good new cards per day setting in Anki?

The default is 20, which suits many students. Raise it only if you can clear reviews every day without falling behind.

How do learning steps change when a card comes back?

Learning steps set the short waits, by default 1 minute and 10 minutes, before a new card graduates into longer review intervals. Longer steps give material more time to settle before it leaves the learning phase.

Can I export my flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included in the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Does DeckOwl have an Anki deck settings screen?

DeckOwl creates the cards and handles spaced repetition in the browser. Deck options such as limits and steps are set in Anki itself after you export.
