How to update an Anki deck when your course material changes

A clean Anki deck update starts with the source material, not a blank card list. Upload the revised slides or notes so the new flashcards match what your instructor actually covered this week.

  • Upload only the sections that changed to avoid duplicate cards.
  • Read each draft card once before importing it into Anki.
  • Keep one fact per card so updates are easy to check.
  • Export is a Plus feature; the free plan studies in the browser.
Example cell biology flashcards for a biology deck
Which organelle modifies, sorts and packages proteins for transport? The Golgi apparatus, which packages proteins into vesicles for delivery inside or outside the cell.
What is the main function of mitochondria? They produce most of the cell's ATP through cellular respiration.
What is osmosis? The net movement of water across a semipermeable membrane toward the side with higher solute concentration.
What is the role of ribosomes? They synthesize proteins by translating mRNA into a polypeptide chain.
How do prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells differ in their nucleus?Prokaryotes lack a membrane-bound nucleus, while eukaryotes have one that holds their DNA.

New cards from new material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages. DeckOwl reads them and drafts flashcards from what changed.

Spaced repetition on every card

Updated cards join a spaced repetition schedule in the browser, so new material gets reviewed at the right intervals alongside older cards.

Export to Anki on Plus

Plus includes Anki export, so you can bring the updated set into your existing Anki deck. Free plans study in the browser without exports.

How it works

Upload the updated material

Add the newest lecture slides, chapter PDF, or notes. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.

Review the generated cards

Check the draft flashcards, edit wording, and remove anything that repeats a card you already have.

Export and study

On Plus, export the set to Anki and import it, or keep studying the deck in DeckOwl with spaced repetition.

Review each draft before you import it. Fix unclear wording, delete duplicates, and keep one card per fact so reviews stay short. Cards from the old version of a lecture are easy to replace once you know which ones changed.

Update in small batches, such as after each lecture or chapter, instead of rebuilding the whole deck before an exam. That keeps your review queue manageable and makes it obvious which material is still new to you.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I update an Anki deck during a semester?

Update after each lecture or chapter so the deck tracks the course. Smaller, frequent updates are easier to review than one large rebuild before an exam.

Can I export an updated deck to Anki for free?

No. Anki export is included with the Plus plan, which is $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study generated flashcards in the browser.

How many new flashcards should I add in one update?

Add only the cards for material you have not studied yet. Keeping each update focused on one lecture or chapter helps you spot duplicates before importing.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl first?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
