When Anki flashcards pay off, and when they don't

Whether Anki flashcards are worth it depends mostly on how much you have to memorize and whether you will review every day. Spaced repetition shows each card just before you would forget it, which is why it works well for terms, definitions and facts you need to keep past the exam.

  • Worth it for courses with lots of terms, definitions, or facts to recall
  • Less useful for essay-heavy courses where understanding matters more than recall
  • Keep the daily backlog small so reviews do not pile up before exams
  • Check every AI-drafted card against your source before you trust it

Cards from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages. DeckOwl reads the text and drafts flashcards from it.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back on a schedule that adapts to how well you recall them, so review time goes to the material you are about to forget.

Export when you need it

Plus includes Anki export, plus PDF, DOCX and CSV. The free plan studies in the browser with 3 generations per month.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a lecture PDF, slide deck, set of notes, or a photo of a textbook page.

Review and edit the cards

Check the draft cards, remove anything vague, and keep each card to one fact.

Study on a daily schedule

Do your reviews every day in the browser, or export to Anki if you prefer its app.

The downside is the upkeep. Writing good cards by hand takes real time, and cards copied from a textbook tend to be too long or too vague to help. For many students, the daily review habit matters more than which app they use.

If you already have lecture slides or notes, generating a first draft of cards from them removes most of the busywork. You still need to check the cards and keep up with reviews.

Frequently asked questions

How many new flashcards should I add per day?

Add only as many new cards as you can review the same day, and keep the backlog small. Adjust the number once you see how long your reviews take.

How do I write flashcards that actually stick?

Keep each card to one fact, phrase the front as a specific question, and avoid copying long passages. Cards that test understanding stick better than cards that ask you to recognize a sentence.

Can I export my flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included in the Plus plan, which costs $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Is there a free way to try it before paying?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students get 40% off with a school email.
