Pausing a deck in Anki

When a deck piles up more reviews than you can handle, the quickest fix is to take it out of rotation for a while. Anki doesn't have a dedicated freeze button, but you can freeze an Anki deck in practice by suspending its cards so they stop appearing in reviews.

  • Suspend cards in the Anki browser to pause them without losing their history.
  • Bury sibling cards when one note creates several reviews you want spread across days.
  • Keep one topic per deck so pausing a single subject does not affect everything else you study.
  • Export from DeckOwl on Plus, then manage pauses and reviews inside Anki.
Example Anki suspend and bury questions
What does suspending a card do in Anki?It removes the card from reviews until you unsuspend it, and its scheduling history stays intact.
What does burying a card do in Anki?It hides the card and its sibling cards until the next day, so they do not appear in the same session.
How do you suspend cards in the Anki browser?Select the cards, then choose Toggle Suspend from the Cards menu.
Why suspend a card instead of deleting it?Deleting erases its review history, while suspending keeps it so you can resume the card later.
What is a sibling card in Anki?A sibling is a card generated from the same note, such as the reverse side of a Basic and reversed card.

Pause without deleting

Suspended cards stay in your collection with their review history intact, so nothing is lost while the deck is on hold.

Build a deck from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page and get a flashcard set made from your own course content.

Take your cards anywhere

On Plus, export flashcards to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV, then manage suspending and burying in the app you already use.

How it works

Upload your material

Add the PDF, slides, notes or images for the topic you want to study.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl creates flashcards with spaced repetition from your content, ready to review in the browser.

Export to Anki when you need it

On Plus, export the set to Anki, then suspend or bury any cards you want to pause.

Burying is the other tool worth knowing. It hides a card and its sibling cards from the same note until the next day, which helps when one fact shows up in several forms and you want to space them out.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep a deck from showing up in reviews for a while?

Suspend its cards in the Anki browser, which removes them from reviews until you unsuspend them. Burying only hides cards until the next day, so suspending is the better choice for a longer pause.

How big should a single flashcard deck be?

Keep each deck to one topic small enough to review comfortably each day. Split large subjects into several decks so you can pause or resume one part without touching the rest.

Can I export DeckOwl flashcards to Anki?

Yes, on the Plus plan, which also includes PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The Free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Does DeckOwl use spaced repetition?

Flashcards use spaced repetition, which is included with the Plus plan along with unlimited generations and exports.
