How to build a Japanese vocabulary deck from your own material

A deck is only as good as its source, so the best Japanese vocabulary flashcards come from the words your class actually uses. Start with the chapter or list your teacher assigned, then add the kanji and example sentences from your own slides.

  • Vocabulary lists taken from your textbook or class slides
  • Photos of printed pages read with text recognition
  • Spaced repetition scheduling for long-term recall
  • Anki, CSV and PDF export on the Plus plan
Example Japanese vocabulary flashcards
食べる (taberu)to eat. Ichidan verb, so the stem 食べ- takes -る in polite form 食べます.
水 (mizu)water. Common in phrases like お水 (o-mizu) for polite requests.
図書館 (toshokan)library. Written with 図 (figure, map) and 書 (book) and 館 (building).
ありがとうございますThank you very much (polite). The casual form is ありがとう (arigatou).
行きます (ikimasu)to go (polite). Dictionary form 行く (iku) is a godan verb, so the stem changes to 行き-.

Upload what you already have

Send PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or notes. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back at the intervals when you are most likely to forget them, so kanji and readings stick longer.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same material into multiple choice, true/false or short answer quizzes with explanations, or a mind map of word groups.

How it works

Add your vocabulary source

Upload a textbook chapter, lecture slides, a DOCX word list or a photo of your notes.

Generate your flashcards

DeckOwl creates front and back cards from the material. Review the set and keep the words you need.

Study with spaced repetition

Study in the browser on the free plan. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Keep each session small. Ten to twenty new words is easier to remember than a full chapter at once, and spaced repetition brings back the ones you miss before you lose them.

Frequently asked questions

How many Japanese vocabulary words should I study per session?

Most learners do better with small batches of new words, such as 10 to 20, than with one long list. Spaced repetition then brings back the words you miss.

Should Japanese flashcards include kana readings?

For most beginners it helps to put the kanji or kana on the front and the reading and meaning on the back. Add example sentences once the core words feel familiar.

Is DeckOwl free to try?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start.

Do I need to pay to export my flashcards?

Yes, exports are part of the paid plans. Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and students get 40% off with a school email.
