What Anki does and does not do with a PDF

The question of whether Anki can convert PDF to flashcards comes up often, and the short answer is no. Anki schedules and quizzes cards very well, but it does not read a PDF and write the cards for you.

  • Anki stores and schedules cards but does not create them from PDFs.
  • Generate cards from your own material so the content matches your course.
  • Review every generated card for accuracy before studying it.
  • Export to Anki on the Plus plan when you want cards in Anki.
Example biology flashcards from a PDF chapter
What is the main function of mitochondria? They produce most of the cell's ATP through cellular respiration.
What does osmosis describe? The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane toward the side with higher solute concentration.
What do ribosomes do?They translate messenger RNA into proteins.
How do mitosis and meiosis differ?Mitosis produces two genetically identical diploid cells; meiosis produces four genetically varied haploid cells.
What does the Golgi apparatus do?It modifies, sorts and packages proteins and lipids for transport.

Reads your PDFs

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text, notes or images. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards are scheduled for review so you see weak facts again before you forget them.

Anki export on Plus

The Plus plan exports your flashcards to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV files.

How it works

Upload your material

Add the PDF or notes from your course, or photograph a page from a printed textbook.

Generate and review cards

Get flashcards from your own text, then edit or delete any card that does not fit.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki on Plus.

The practical route is to generate the flashcards first from your own PDF, then move them into Anki for spaced review. You keep control of the content, because every card comes from the chapter or slides you uploaded.

Check each card before you study it. Remove anything that is not in your course material, and fix any question that is vague.

How many flashcards should I make from one biology chapter?

Can I export generated flashcards to Anki?

Yes, on the Plus plan, which also includes PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study. No credit card is needed to start.
