Making flashcards from a PowerPoint deck

Your lecture deck already holds the key terms, so you can make flashcards on PowerPoint without retyping a single slide. Each slide title and bullet point becomes a candidate question, which means the cards stay tied to what your instructor actually covered.

  • Upload PPTX files alongside PDFs, DOCX, plain notes or photos of pages
  • Keep cards tied to the lecture order so review matches your class
  • Edit or delete generated cards before you start studying
  • Move from browser study to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV export on Plus
Example intro biology flashcards from lecture slides
What is the function of mitochondria? They produce most of the cell's ATP through cellular respiration.
What organelle modifies, sorts and ships proteins? The Golgi apparatus, which packages proteins into vesicles for transport.
What is osmosis? The net movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from lower to higher solute concentration.
What is the role of ribosomes? They synthesize proteins by translating mRNA into polypeptide chains.
What does the phospholipid bilayer do?It forms a selectively permeable barrier that separates the cell interior from its environment.

Reads your PPTX directly

Upload the slide deck as it is. Titles, bullet points and speaker-note text are read so the cards follow your lecture order.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know are spaced further apart, so you spend time on what you are likely to forget.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same deck into multiple choice, true/false or short answer quizzes with explanations, or a mind map of the main topics.

How it works

Upload your slides

Drop in a PPTX file, or a PDF, DOCX or photo of printed slides if that is what you have.

Review the generated cards

Check the front and back of each flashcard, edit anything that does not match your course, and remove cards you do not need.

Study on a spaced schedule

Work through the deck in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV on Plus.

Slides are short on explanation, so review the cards once you have them. Cut any card that just repeats a slide title, and add a card for each process or cause-and-effect link the slides only hint at. A deck of 40 slides often yields a manageable set of cards once duplicates are removed.

Once the deck is in, spaced repetition does the scheduling. You answer each card, rate how well you knew it, and the cards you struggle with come back more often.

Frequently asked questions

Does DeckOwl accept PowerPoint files?

Yes. You can upload a PPTX file directly and DeckOwl generates flashcards from the text on the slides.

How many flashcards should I make from one lecture deck?

Aim for one card per key term, definition or cause-and-effect relationship rather than one per slide. Keep the cards you cannot yet answer from memory and drop the rest.

Can I export the flashcards to Anki?

Yes, on the Plus plan ($99.90/year or $9.99/month) you can export to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Is there a free plan to try it with my slides?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start.
