Why build your own CFA Level 1 flashcards

Kaplan's CFA Level 1 materials belong to Kaplan, so DeckOwl cannot supply a ready-made set of CFA Level 1 flashcards from their books or question banks. What it can do is turn the notes and slides you already have into cards that match your own course.

  • Upload your own Kaplan lecture notes, slides or PDFs.
  • Keep each card to one formula, definition or standard.
  • Review cards on a spaced schedule instead of rereading notes.
  • Export to Anki on Plus if you prefer another flashcard app.
Example CFA Level 1 flashcards for ethics and quant
What are the seven categories of the CFA Institute Standards of Professional Conduct?Professionalism, Integrity of Capital Markets, Duties to Clients, Duties to Employers, Investment Analysis, Recommendations and Actions, Conflicts of Interest, and Responsibilities as a CFA Institute Member or Candidate.
What is the present value formula for a single cash flow?PV = FV / (1 + r)^n, where r is the rate per period and n is the number of periods. Discounting converts a future amount into today's value.
What does the current ratio measure?Current assets divided by current liabilities. It shows whether a company can cover its short-term obligations with its short-term assets.
What does a bond's modified duration approximate? The approximate percentage change in price for a 1 percentage point change in yield. A bond with duration 5 falls roughly 5% if yields rise by 1 point.
How does an annuity due differ from an ordinary annuity? An annuity due makes payments at the beginning of each period, so its present value is higher by a factor of (1 + r). An ordinary annuity pays at the end of each period.

Built from your material

Upload PDFs, PowerPoint slides, DOCX files, plain notes or photos of pages. Cards come from what you actually studied.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know fade out of the rotation, so review time goes to the topics that need it.

Export when you need it

Study in the browser on the free plan. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export for studying on other tools.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slide deck, DOCX file, text notes or a photo of a page from your Level 1 review.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl reads the text and writes question-and-answer cards. Edit any card before you start.

Review on a schedule

Study each day in the browser. Spaced repetition brings back the cards you have not yet mastered.

Level 1 covers a wide range of topics, from ethics and quantitative methods to financial statement analysis and fixed income. Cards work best when each one tests a single formula, definition or rule, with the answer written in your own words.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for CFA Level 1?

There is no fixed number, but most candidates find that a few hundred well-chosen cards cover the key formulas and definitions. Focus on items you keep forgetting rather than trying to cover every sentence in the syllabus.

How should I study CFA Level 1 formulas with flashcards?

Put the formula on the back along with the inputs and units it needs. Practice applying it to a sample problem as well as recalling it, because the exam tests use, not just memory.

Can I export my CFA flashcards to Anki?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. Anki, PDF, DOCX and CSV export are included in Plus at $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month.

Does DeckOwl include Kaplan's question bank?

No. DeckOwl only generates cards from the material you upload, such as your own Kaplan notes, slides or PDFs.
