How to build chemical equilibrium flashcards that stick

Equilibrium problems often fail at the setup: students know the formula for Kc but mix up which species belong in the expression or which way a shift goes. Good chemical equilibrium flashcards split those steps into small questions, so each card tests one idea such as writing a reaction quotient or predicting the effect of a temperature change.

  • Write one idea per card, such as the expression for Kc or the effect of adding a reactant.
  • Keep Le Chatelier cards short by asking which direction the system shifts and why.
  • Add a card for each unit or temperature condition that changes the value of Kc.
  • Review missed cards the next day instead of cramming before the exam.
Example chemical equilibrium flashcards
What does the equilibrium constant Kc express? The ratio of product to reactant concentrations, each raised to its stoichiometric coefficient, at equilibrium and a fixed temperature.
What happens when more reactant is added to a system at equilibrium? The system shifts toward products to consume some of the added reactant, until a new equilibrium is reached.
Does adding a catalyst change the equilibrium position? No. A catalyst speeds up the forward and reverse reactions equally, so equilibrium is reached faster but Kc stays the same.
How does raising temperature shift an exothermic reaction at equilibrium? It shifts toward the reactants, because the added heat is consumed by the reverse reaction.
What is an ICE table used for?It tracks Initial, Change and Equilibrium concentrations so you can solve for unknown equilibrium concentrations from Kc.

Cards from your own material

Your lecture slides and textbook chapter become cards that match your course, not a generic list.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know fade into longer gaps so review time goes where it is needed.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Switch to multiple choice or short answer questions with explanations, or map how K, Q and reaction quotient connect.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page. Text recognition reads images.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl builds question and answer flashcards from the chemical equilibrium content in your file.

Study in the browser

Review each day with spaced repetition. Free accounts study in the browser with 3 generations per month.

Start with the definitions and the rules you must recall without thinking, then add the worked-problem steps like the ICE table setup. Review cards in short sessions over several days, and when you get a card wrong, rewrite the back so it names the principle behind the answer.

Frequently asked questions

What should the back of a chemical equilibrium flashcard say?

Give the answer and one line of reasoning, such as the direction of the shift and the principle behind it. Short reasoning helps you remember the rule for new problems.

How do I remember which way equilibrium shifts under Le Chatelier's principle?

Ask what the system can do to undo the change: adding a reactant pushes the shift toward products, and raising temperature favors the endothermic direction. Practice this with one card per change.

Can I export my chemical equilibrium flashcards to Anki?

Anki export is a paid feature on the Plus plan, which costs $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month. Free accounts can study the cards in the browser but cannot export them.

Is there a free plan to try DeckOwl?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students can get 40% off paid plans with a school email.
