Why generate your own set

Pinyin, Bopomofo and the four tones that change meaning make Chinese sound-learning unusually detailed, and a generic set rarely matches the order your course teaches it. Chinese alphabet flashcards made from your own lesson material keep the vocabulary, romanization and tone marks aligned with your class.

  • Cards follow your textbook's unit order instead of a fixed alphabetical list.
  • Pinyin, tone marks and Bopomofo symbols can all appear on the same card.
  • Spaced repetition brings back the sounds you keep confusing.
  • Quizzes can test recognition and recall after you finish the deck.
Example Chinese alphabet flashcards (pinyin and Bopomofo)
What is pinyin? The official romanization system for Mandarin Chinese, using Latin letters and tone marks to show pronunciation.
How many tones does standard Mandarin have?Four main tones plus a neutral tone. The syllable ma changes meaning with each tone.
What is Bopomofo (Zhuyin)?A phonetic symbol system of 37 characters, used mainly in Taiwan to teach Mandarin pronunciation.
What sound does ㄅ represent in Bopomofo? The sound b, the first symbol in the Bopomofo system.
What sound does the pinyin initial zh represent?A retroflex sound, made with the tongue tip curled back, similar to English j but curled back.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, slide deck, handwritten notes or a photo of a page, and the cards come from what your teacher actually covered.

Spaced repetition

Cards you find hard come back sooner, so you spend less time rereading the ones you already know.

Study anywhere

Study in the browser on the free plan. Export to Anki or CSV when you upgrade to Plus.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or image of your pinyin chart or lesson page.

Review the cards

Check the generated fronts and backs, and edit any character, tone mark or stroke-order detail before you study.

Study with spacing

Work through the deck daily, and let the schedule bring back the characters you keep missing.

Start with the sounds your teacher introduced first, then add the harder finals and tone combinations as the unit moves on. Reviewing a small set daily tends to work better than cramming a long list the night before a quiz.

If you use a printed set from a shop or website, you can still study it. The advantage of generating your own is that every card points back to the page your class is using.

Frequently asked questions

How many pinyin syllables should I memorize first?

Start with the initials and finals in your course's first unit, then add tones as you go. Most courses introduce the full set gradually over a semester, so pace yourself to the syllables you are actually using.

Should I learn pinyin or Bopomofo first?

Pinyin is the romanization used in most mainland materials and many schools, so it is the safer default. If your course teaches Bopomofo, follow your teacher's sequence instead.

Can I export these cards to Anki?

Yes, but exports are a paid feature. The free plan lets you study in the browser, and Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
