How a Chinese flashcards app fits into your study routine

Most Chinese courses hand you a new list of characters every week, and a Chinese flashcards app that reads those pages directly saves you from typing every entry by hand.

  • Works from typed lists, scanned textbook pages and photos of the whalebboard
  • Keeps characters, pinyin and meanings on the same card set you already use in class
  • Lets you add new material each week instead of starting a fresh deck
  • Includes quizzes and mind maps if you want to test tones or radicals another way
Example Chinese vocabulary flashcards
What does 你好 (nǐ hǎo) mean?Hello. It is the standard greeting and can be used at any time of day.
What does 谢谢 (xièxie) mean?Thank you.
What does 再见 (zàijiàn) mean?Goodbye.
What does the character 水 (shuǐ) mean?Water. It also appears as a radical in many characters related to liquids.
What are the four tones in Mandarin, plus the neutral tone?First tone is high and level, second rises, third dips then rises, fourth falls, and the neutral tone is short and light.

Reads your own pages

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages, and the text is pulled out for you.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know fade into longer gaps, so review time goes to what you forget.

Flashcards you can take with you

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki or CSV on Plus when you want your deck elsewhere.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a vocabulary list, a chapter scan, or a set of slides from class.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl builds question and answer cards from the text you provided.

Review on schedule

Study the deck in short sessions and let spaced repetition decide when each card returns.

Good character study depends on seeing the same items again after a gap. Spaced repetition handles that schedule, so a character you struggled with on Monday appears again before you lose it, while easy ones stop taking up time.

You can also keep the cards tied to your own course. Generate a deck from this week's lesson, study it, then add the next lesson's pages without rebuilding anything.

Frequently asked questions

How many new characters should I add in one session?

Many learners do better with a small batch, such as 10 to 20 new characters, than a whole chapter at once. Spaced repetition then brings the harder ones back before they fade.

Should pinyin and tones go on the front or the back of a card?

Putting the character on the front and pinyin with the meaning on the back works well for recognition. Some learners prefer the reverse to practice recall, so try both on a small deck.

Can I export my Chinese flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included on the Plus plan, which also covers PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study flashcards in the browser without exports.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start.
