Why a custom set beats a generic printable

Printable ck worksheets work for drill, but a generic sheet rarely matches the words your class is studying this week. A better route is ck phonics flashcards built from your own lesson material.

  • Cards use the exact words from your lesson, not a generic list.
  • Ck words are grouped with the short vowel that comes before them.
  • Missed words return sooner through spaced repetition.
  • Start free with no credit card, then export to PDF or Anki on a paid plan.
Example ck phonics flashcards for short vowels
Which vowel comes before ck in duck?A single short u. The ck spells the /k/ sound after that short vowel.
Why is it clock and not clok? The short o sound is followed by ck, which keeps the vowel short before the /k/ sound.
Why does bike use k instead of ck?The silent e makes the i long, so the final /k/ is spelled with k, not ck.
Can ck begin an English word? No. Ck appears only after a short vowel and does not start words.
Spell the short a word for the rear part of the body that uses ck.Back. The short a is followed by ck for the /k/ sound at the end.

Built from your words

Upload a PDF, slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a worksheet and get cards that use the ck words you are studying.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know are spaced further apart, so the short-vowel patterns stick.

Study in the browser

Practice on any device with a browser. Paid plans add PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export for printing or sharing.

How it works

Add your material

Upload the word list, lesson slides or a photo of the page. Images are read with text recognition.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl creates flashcards with the target words on the front and the spelling pattern or meaning on the back.

Review on a schedule

Study a few minutes at a time and let spaced repetition decide which cards come back next.

The ck digraph spells the /k/ sound at the end of a one-syllable word after a single short vowel, as in back, duck, clock and sick. It is not used at the start of English words, and words like bike or milk use k instead because the vowel or consonant pattern is different. Cards that drill these contrasts help students see the pattern rather than memorize isolated spellings.

If your list mixes short-vowel ck words with k words, keep them in separate sets so the contrast is visible when you review.

Frequently asked questions

How many ck words should a beginner study in one set?

Small sets work best for beginners, often eight to twelve words focused on one short vowel. Mixing many vowel patterns at once makes the ck rule harder to notice.

Why does duck use ck but bike uses k?

Ck follows a single short vowel at the end of a word, as in duck. Bike has a long vowel made by the silent e, so the final sound is spelled with k.

Can I print my flashcards?

Printing is done by exporting to PDF, which is a paid feature on the Plus plan. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start.
