Why build your own digraph set

Free printable sheets of digraph flashcards are easy to find, but they cover a generic list of sounds, not the ones your class is working on this week.

  • Front shows the digraph, back shows a word and its sound
  • Consonant digraphs like ch, sh, th, ng and ck, plus vowel digraphs like ai and ea
  • Edit any card before you study
  • PDF, Anki and CSV export are on Plus
Example digraph flashcards for early reading
What sound does the digraph sh make in ship?/sh/, a single sound made by two letters that together form one sound.
What sound does ea make in bread?Short e, /e/, as in bread. Ea can also say long e, as in tea, so check the word.
Why does duck end in ck?After a short vowel, the k sound at the end of a word is spelled ck, so duck has the /k/ sound.
Does ng in ring make two sounds? No. Ng makes one nasal sound, /ng/, as in sing, not /n/ followed by /g/.
Why is the k silent in knee? The kn digraph is spelled with a silent k, and the word is pronounced with just the /n/ sound.

Frequently asked questions

What is a digraph?

A digraph is two letters that together make one sound, such as sh in ship or ai in rain. Consonant digraphs like ch and th are often taught first, followed by vowel digraphs like ee and oa.

How many digraph flashcards should I make for a phonics unit?

Keep each set focused on one or two digraphs at a time so the sounds are easy to compare. Include a short sample word on each card so you practice the sound in context.

Can I get a PDF of my flashcards for free?

The free plan has 3 generations a month and lets you study in the browser, but PDF export requires Plus at $99.90/year or $9.99/month. Students get 40% off with a school email.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card and upgrade later if you want exports.
