Why build your own alphabet cards

Most ready-made alphabet cards use the same pictures and word lists for every child, which rarely matches the phonics program or the vocabulary a teacher is using. DIY ABC flash cards built from your own worksheet or chart keep the letters, sounds and example words consistent with what the learner sees in class.

  • Cards come from your own letter charts, worksheets and notes, not a generic template.
  • Photos of handwritten or printed material are read with text recognition.
  • Spaced repetition focuses practice on the letters that are still hard.
  • The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, with no credit card needed to start.
Example alphabet flash cards for early readers
Which sound does the letter a make in apple? The short a sound, as in apple and ant. Pair the letter with a picture word that starts with it.
How do you tell lowercase b from d?The stick of b is on the left and its loop is on the right; d is the reverse. Trace both letters to build the difference.
Which lowercase letters have a tail below the line?g, j, p, q and y. These are called descenders, so they drop below the baseline.
How do you tell lowercase m from n?m has three humps and n has two. Counting the bumps is a quick check for early readers.
What sound does the letter g make before e, i or y?A soft j sound, as in gem and giant. Before a, o or u, g usually makes a hard sound, as in goat.
Generate the full set

Starts from your material

Upload a PDF worksheet, a slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a handwritten alphabet chart. Text is read from images, so you do not need to retype anything.

Cards that repeat at the right time

Spaced repetition shows letters you miss more often and spaces out the ones you already know, so the alphabet sticks without daily drilling.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you study generated cards in the browser. Exporting to PDF, DOCX, Anki or CSV is available on Plus.

How it works

Add your alphabet material

Upload a file, paste your notes or snap a photo of a letter chart or worksheet.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl turns the letters, sounds and example words into flashcards with a question on the front and the answer on the back.

Study and review

Work through the deck in your browser. Spaced repetition brings back the letters that need more practice.

Start by uploading the source you already use, whether that is a scanned handout, a slide from a reading lesson or a photo of a letter poster on the wall. DeckOwl reads the text and produces cards you can review on any device, with spaced repetition scheduling the reviews.

If you want the cards outside the browser, Plus allows PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, so you can keep a copy or move the deck into another app.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for learning the alphabet?

Many early learners do well with one card per uppercase letter and one per lowercase letter, plus a card for each common sound. Add a few mixed-up pairs such as b and d once the basic shapes are steady.

What should be on the front and back of an alphabet flash card?

Put the letter, or a picture word that starts with it, on the front and the matching letter or sound on the back. For older learners, a short note about a tricky sound can go on the back as well.

Can I export my DIY ABC flash cards?

Yes, but exports are a paid feature. Plus ($99.90/year or $9.99/month) includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, while the free plan lets you study generated cards in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan with no credit card, which includes 3 generations per month. Students with a school email get 40% off paid plans.
