Turn your own notes into a printable flash card template

We don't hand out ready-made InDesign files. Instead, DeckOwl builds the cards from your own PDF, slides, notes or photos of pages, then you can export a PDF and lay it out however you like.

Why generate your own flash card template

Designers and teachers who need printed study cards often start with a blank InDesign file and spend hours typing terms into a grid. A flash card template for InDesign works well for layout, but the content still has to come from somewhere, and that is usually the slow part.

  • Upload PDFs, slides, notes or photos of pages
  • Review and edit every card before you print
  • Study in the browser on the Free plan with 3 generations per month
  • Export PDF, DOCX, Anki or CSV on Plus for custom layouts
Example InDesign flashcards for print layout
What is bleed in InDesign, and what is a common setting?Bleed is extra image area past the trim edge, usually 0.125 in (3 mm) on each side, so color reaches the edge after cutting.
What does a master page do in InDesign? It holds repeating elements such as headers, page numbers and frames, which then apply to document pages and can be overridden per page.
What is the difference between a paragraph style and a character style?A paragraph style formats whole paragraphs, while a character style formats selected text inside a paragraph without changing the paragraph itself.
What is an .indt file in InDesign? It is an InDesign template, which opens as an untitled copy so the original template file stays unchanged.
What does Package do in InDesign? It gathers the document, linked images, fonts and a report into one folder so the job can be sent to a printer.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page, and get flashcards that match what you actually need to learn.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back at the right time, so the ones you miss show up more often and the ones you know fade into review.

PDF export on Plus

Export your card set as a PDF on the Plus plan, then place it in InDesign or print it as is.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slide deck, document or photo of your pages. Text is read from images too.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl writes question and answer cards from the material, which you can review and edit.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the Free plan, or export a PDF on Plus for a printed or custom InDesign layout.

DeckOwl reverses the order. You upload the lecture slides or textbook chapter, the tool produces question and answer cards, and you keep control over wording before anything is printed. Spaced repetition then schedules review inside the app.

If you want a printed set, export the cards as a PDF on the Plus plan and place that file in your own InDesign layout. Students on a school email get 40% off, and no credit card is needed to start.

Frequently asked questions

What size should printed flashcards be?

Standard index cards are 3 by 5 inches, while smaller pocket cards are often 3.5 by 2 inches. Pick a size that fits your printer and how you plan to carry the cards.

How many flashcards should I make for one study session?

Start with a short set of 15 to 25 cards so the session stays focused. Add new cards once you can answer most of the current set without looking.

Can DeckOwl export directly to an InDesign file?

No, DeckOwl does not export InDesign files. On the Plus plan you can export a PDF of your cards and place it in InDesign yourself.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but exports require Plus or Pro. No credit card is needed to start.
