What makes a flashcard easy to learn from

Good flashcard design ideas start with one rule: each card should hold one fact, term or relationship. When a card asks for three things, a wrong answer tells you almost nothing about which part you missed. Splitting dense cards into several small ones usually improves review results, even though it creates more cards.

  • Write fronts as questions that name the concept, not bare labels like 'Contrast'.
  • Keep backs to one to three lines so you can grade your recall quickly.
  • Use images for things you must recognise visually, such as layouts, icons or diagrams.
  • Make a separate card for each exception or edge case instead of listing them on one back.
Example design principle flashcards
What is the Gestalt principle of proximity?Elements placed close together are perceived as a group, so spacing can signal which items belong together.
What is visual hierarchy? The arrangement of elements so the eye sees the most important one first, using size, weight, colour and spacing.
What does the rule of thirds suggest for composition?Divide the frame into a 3 by 3 grid and place key subjects along the lines or where they intersect.
What contrast ratio does WCAG AA require for normal body text?At least 4.5 to 1 between text and background, so text stays legible for people with low vision.
How do kerning and tracking differ in typography?Kerning adjusts the space between one specific pair of letters, while tracking adjusts spacing evenly across a range of text.

One idea per card

Each card tests a single fact, term or relationship, so a missed answer tells you exactly what to review.

Clear prompts

Fronts are written as specific questions rather than bare labels, which makes recall easier to check honestly.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you know come back less often and shaky ones come back sooner, so your review time goes to the right material.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text notes or images of pages. Photos are read with text recognition.

Review the generated cards

Check that each front asks one clear question and each back gives one clear answer, then edit anything vague.

Study on a schedule

Work through the deck in the browser. Spaced repetition decides which cards return and when.

Layout matters too. Put the prompt on the front in plain language, keep the back short enough to check at a glance, and use an image only when the visual itself is what you need to recall, such as a diagram label or a colour palette. Decorative images and long paragraphs slow down review without adding much memory cue.

Frequently asked questions

How many facts should one flashcard contain?

Keep each card to a single fact or idea so you can grade your recall honestly. If a back needs a list of several items, split it into separate cards.

Should design flashcards use images or only text?

Use an image when the visual is the thing you need to recall, such as a layout pattern or a labelled diagram. Keep text prompts short when the image is only decoration.
