What a good GCSE flashcard looks like

Good revision cards ask one precise question with a short answer you can check. The GCSE flashcard examples below follow that pattern across biology, chemistry, physics, history and maths, so you can see the format before you make your own set.

  • Keep each card to one fact, term or step so you can grade yourself honestly.
  • Write answers in the words your exam board uses, not paraphrases you cannot check.
  • Mix subjects in a daily session rather than finishing one topic before starting the next.
  • Review cards you got wrong the same day, then let spaced repetition space them out.
Example GCSE flashcards across biology, chemistry, physics, history and maths
What is osmosis? The net movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential.
What is an exothermic reaction?A reaction that transfers energy to the surroundings, usually as heat, so the temperature of the surroundings rises.
What is the equation linking speed, distance and time?Speed = distance ÷ time, with speed in metres per second when distance is in metres and time is in seconds.
What was the Treaty of Versailles? The 1919 peace settlement that ended World War I with Germany, imposing territorial losses, military limits and reparations.
What is the quadratic formula?x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a, used to solve equations in the form ax² + bx + c = 0.

Cards from your own notes

Upload PDFs, slides, DOCX or PPTX files, plain text, or photos of handwritten pages and get flashcards built from your actual course material.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you find hard come back sooner, and easier ones spread out, so revision time goes to the facts you are most likely to forget.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same notes into multiple choice, true or false, and short answer quizzes with explanations, or into a mind map of the topic.

How it works

Upload your revision material

Add the notes, slides or textbook pages for the topic you are studying. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Review the generated cards

Check the questions and answers against your teacher's specification and edit anything that is unclear before you start studying.

Study on a schedule

Work through the cards in the browser each day. Spaced repetition brings back the ones you miss until they stick.

Examples only help so far, because the exam will ask about your course and your exam board's wording. DeckOwl builds cards from the material you upload, so a Biology unit on osmosis or a History unit on the Treaty of Versailles becomes a deck tailored to what you were taught. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser.

When you are ready to revise over several weeks, paid plans add unlimited generations and export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV. Students with a school email get 40% off.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for a GCSE topic?

A typical topic such as a single Biology unit can usually be covered with a few dozen cards, one for each key term, process or fact. Start with the most testable content and add more as you find gaps.

What makes a flashcard useful for GCSE revision?

A useful card has one clear question on the front and a short, accurate answer on the back, ideally using the terminology from your specification. Cards that ask you to explain a process work well when the answer is a single step.

Can I export my flashcards to Anki or CSV?

Yes, but exports are a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and the free plan lets you study in the browser without exporting.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, which includes 3 generations per month. Students with a school email get 40% off paid plans.
