Why question words are a good first set to drill

Many learners of English get stuck on who, what and which long before they can build a full sentence, so a small stack of question words flashcards is a useful place to start. Each card pairs a word with the kind of answer it asks for, which is the part textbooks often skip.

  • Covers the usual set: who, what, when, where, why, how and which.
  • Cards come from your own handout or slides, so the examples match your class.
  • Study in the browser on the Free plan; export to Anki or CSV on Plus.
  • No credit card is needed to start.
Example English question word flashcards
Which word asks for a reason or cause? Why. It is answered with 'because' or 'so that', as in 'Why are you late?'
Which question word asks about a place?Where. It asks for a location, as in 'Where is the library?'
Which question word asks about a time or date? When. It asks for a time, day or date, as in 'When does the test start?'
Which question word chooses one item from a known group?Which. It asks for a choice from options already in mind, as in 'Which bus goes downtown?'
Which question word asks about a person?Who. It asks for a person or people, as in 'Who wrote this poem?'

Built from your files

Works with PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text and photos of pages, which are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so your practice time goes to the words that need it most.

Quizzes and mind maps

Turn the same lesson into multiple choice, true or false, or short answer quizzes with explanations.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slides, a DOCX, plain notes or a photo of a worksheet.

Generate the cards

The tool builds question and answer pairs from the text it reads in your file.

Review on a schedule

Spaced repetition brings back the cards you find hard more often than the ones you know.

If you were hoping for a ready-made printable set, DeckOwl works differently. It builds cards from your own lesson, so the examples match the sentences your teacher uses and the vocabulary you actually need to learn.

Start with the six core words, then add which and whose once those feel familiar. Review a few cards each day rather than the whole list in one sitting.
