Turn your phonics worksheets into printable flashcards

Ready-made phonics printables are easy to find, but they rarely match the sounds your child is working on. Upload your own word lists, worksheets or photos of pages and DeckOwl builds flashcards you can review with spaced repetition.

Why generate your own printable phonics cards

Many free printable phonics flashcard sets are written for a generic class, so they may cover sounds your child has not reached yet or skip the ones they struggle with. Generating free printable phonics flashcards as a PDF from your own material lets the cards match the lesson, the spelling list or the sounds you are working on this week.

  • Cards built from your own word lists and worksheets, not a generic set
  • Spaced repetition brings back the sounds you miss most often
  • Free plan: 3 generations per month, studied in the browser
  • PDF export is included with Plus, for printing at home or in class
Example phonics flashcards for early readers
What sound does the digraph sh make? The /sh/ sound, as in ship, fish and shop. The two letters work together to make one sound.
What does the silent e do in cap and cape?It makes the vowel say its long name, so cape has a long a sound, while cap has a short a sound.
What is a consonant blend? Two or three consonants said together with each sound still heard, such as st in stop or tr in train.
What is an r-controlled vowel?A vowel followed by r, whose sound changes from its usual one, as in car, fork and bird.
What are the five long vowel sounds?a as in cake, e as in bee, i as in bike, o as in boat, and u as in cube.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, slides, plain notes or a photo of a worksheet, and the flashcards follow the phonics patterns already in it.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so short daily practice keeps earlier sounds from fading.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same phonics material into multiple choice, true/false or short answer quizzes with explanations, or into a mind map of sound families.

How it works

Upload your phonics material

Add a word list, lesson PDF, or a clear photo of a worksheet. Photos are read with text recognition.

Generate your flashcards

DeckOwl creates question-and-answer cards from the sounds and words in your file. The free plan includes 3 generations per month.

Study or export

Practice in the browser for free. Plus adds PDF export so you can print cards, along with DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Spaced repetition helps the sounds stick. Cards for letter patterns the reader misses come back sooner, and mastered ones appear less often. This is useful for digraphs, silent e and blends, where a child may know a pattern in one word but not in another.

The free plan lets you generate up to 3 sets per month and study them in the browser with no exports. To print the cards as a PDF, you need the Plus plan at $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month, which also removes the generation limit. Students with a school email get 40% off, and no credit card is needed to start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I print phonics flashcards for free?

The free plan lets you generate and study flashcards in the browser, but exporting to PDF is a Plus feature. Plus costs $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month, and students with a school email get 40% off.

How many phonics flashcards should a child practice at once?

Many teachers suggest starting with a small set of about 10 to 15 cards focused on one sound pattern, then adding more once the child reads them with confidence. Short daily sessions of around 10 minutes usually work better than long weekly ones.

Which phonics skills should flashcards cover first?

Most early reading programs start with single letter sounds, then consonant digraphs like sh and ch, then blends, long vowels and silent e. Building cards in that order helps each new pattern connect to skills the reader already has.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without entering a credit card, and you can upgrade later if you want PDF export or unlimited generations.
