How to study French adjectives with flashcards

Most ready-made French adjectives flashcards list the same words in the same order, whether or not they match the chapter your teacher assigned. A printable sheet cannot show which endings your professor drills or which exceptions appeared on last week's quiz. Generating cards from your own material keeps the set aligned with what you need to know.

  • Put the masculine singular on the front and the feminine and plural forms on the back.
  • Make separate cards for adjectives that usually come before the noun, such as petit and grand.
  • Include the irregular feminines like heureuse and blanche, since they are the usual source of mistakes.
  • Review your cards out loud so you hear the agreement as well as see it.
Example French adjectives flashcards
What is the feminine form of blanc (white)?Blanche. Most feminine adjectives add -e, and the final c changes to che.
What is the feminine form of heureux (happy)?Heureuse. Adjectives ending in -eux change to -euse in the feminine.
Which form of beau (beautiful) comes before a masculine singular noun that starts with a vowel sound?Bel, as in un bel arbre. This form is used before masculine singular nouns starting with a vowel or silent h.
Where does grand (big, tall) usually go in a sentence? Before the noun, as in un grand arbre. It belongs to the group of adjectives that usually precede the noun.
What is the masculine plural of nouveau (new)?Nouveaux, as in nouveaux livres. Adjectives ending in -eau add -x in the masculine plural.

DeckOwl reads the text and drafts question and answer cards for each adjective and form.

Study on schedule

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki or CSV on Plus.

Adjectives are where French learners lose the most points: agreement in gender and number, placement before or after the noun, and irregular forms like beau, nouveau and vieux. Write one card per form, with the masculine, feminine and plural on the back, so you practice agreement instead of memorizing a list. Spaced repetition then brings back the forms you miss most often.

Keep each set to one lesson at a time so the cards stay focused. Review new cards daily until they feel automatic, then let the schedule space out the older ones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I memorize French adjective agreement?

Put the masculine singular on the front and the feminine and plural forms on the back, then say each form aloud. Mixing in cards for adjectives that come before the noun helps with placement too.

Which French adjectives usually go before the noun?

Common ones include beau, bon, grand, petit, jeune, vieux, nouveau and mauvais. A common memory aid is BANGS, for beauty, age, number, goodness and size, but check your textbook since some sources group them differently.

Can I export these French adjectives flashcards to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is included on the Plus plan, which also adds PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Is there a free plan?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study. Plus is $39/year or $7.99/month, and students get 40% off with a school email.
