Why generate your own conjugation cards

Printed verb tables show every form at once, which makes it easy to recognize a conjugation and hard to produce one from memory. French conjugation flashcards work better when each card asks for a single form and reveals the answer only after you try.

  • One form per card, such as tu with the imparfait, so you practice the ending and not a whole table.
  • Cards built from your course verbs rather than a fixed list that may skip irregular forms your teacher covers.
  • Spaced repetition that brings back the forms you miss more often.
  • Quiz mode with explanations when you want to check agreement and auxiliary choice, not just recall.
Example French conjugation flashcards
Present tense of parler, je formje parle. Regular -er verbs drop the infinitive ending and add -e for je.
Passé composé of aller, nous formnous sommes allés. Aller takes être as its auxiliary, so the past participle agrees with the subject.
Subjunctive of faire, que je formque je fasse. Faire has an irregular stem in the subjunctive, so it does not follow the -er pattern.
Futur simple of finir, ils formils finiront. The -ir future keeps the infinitive and adds the future endings, so the r stays in place.
Imparfait of être, tu formtu étais. Être has an irregular stem in the imparfait, so the endings do not come from the present tense.

Cards from your material

Upload a PDF, slides, a DOCX, typed notes or a photo of a page. Text is read from images, so handwritten-then-photographed lists still work.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know fade into longer gaps, so the forms that give you trouble get the most practice.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Switch to multiple choice or short-answer questions with explanations, or map how the tenses relate to each other.

How it works

Upload your verb source

Add the textbook pages, class handout or notes that list the verbs and tenses you need to learn.

Review the generated cards

Check that each card asks for one form, such as nous with the passé composé, and edit anything that does not match your course.

Study in short daily sessions

Work through the due cards each day. Spaced repetition decides what comes back and when.

Ready-made printable sheets are a fine starting point, but they cover the verbs someone else picked. DeckOwl reads your own chapter or class handout and builds cards from the verbs and tenses you actually have to learn, then schedules the forms you keep missing for more practice.

Frequently asked questions

Which tenses should I start with in French conjugation practice?

Most beginners start with the present tense of regular -er, -ir and -re verbs, then the passé composé with avoir and être. Add the imparfait and futur simple once those feel automatic.

How many verbs should I add to a flashcard deck at once?

Around 10 to 15 new verbs a week is a manageable pace for most learners, with each verb split into the forms for je, tu, il, nous, vous and ils. Short daily reviews work better than one long cram session.

Can I export my French conjugation cards to Anki?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. The Plus plan at $39 a year or $7.99 a month includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and students get 40% off with a school email.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. The free plan gives you 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start.
