How to study functional groups for the MCAT

Functional groups appear in nearly every MCAT organic chemistry passage, and repeated recall is the fastest way to make them automatic. Ready-made MCAT functional groups flashcards cover the standard list, but they rarely match the way your own course frames the material. DeckOwl builds a deck from whatever you already study, so the carbonyl families and amine types you were taught are the ones you drill.

  • One card per functional group with its structure, name, and typical reactivity
  • Spaced repetition that brings back the groups you keep missing
  • Works from PDFs, slides, DOCX files, notes, or photos of textbook pages
  • Export to Anki or CSV on Plus to keep reviewing on your own schedule
Example MCAT functional groups flashcards
Which functional group is R-C(=O)-OH?Carboxylic acid. The carbonyl and hydroxyl share one carbon, which makes the group acidic.
Which functional group has the form R-C(=O)-NH2?Amide. The nitrogen is bonded to the carbonyl carbon, so its lone pair is delocalized and the group is weakly basic.
What functional group is R-O-R'?Ether. An oxygen bonded to two carbon groups, with no carbonyl or hydroxyl present.
Which functional group is R-C(=O)-H?Aldehyde. The carbonyl carbon has at least one hydrogen, which makes it oxidize more readily than a ketone.
Why is a primary amine more basic than an amide? The amine lone pair is free to accept a proton, while the amide lone pair is shared with the carbonyl.

Cards from your own material

Upload a PDF, PPTX, DOCX, typed notes, or a photo of a page. The cards follow the groups and definitions your course actually covers.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss, like amine versus amide basicity, come back sooner so the hard comparisons stick before test day.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Switch to multiple choice or true/false quizzes with explanations, or map how the functional groups relate to each other.

How it works

Upload your material

Add the PDF, slides, or notes from your organic chemistry course or review book.

Generate your flashcards

DeckOwl pulls out the functional groups, names, structures, and key properties into front and back cards.

Review on a schedule

Study in the browser and let spaced repetition bring back the groups you keep missing.

Spaced repetition then schedules each card so the ones you miss come back sooner. Upload a PDF, slides, typed notes, or a photo of a textbook page, and start reviewing in the browser on the free plan.

Frequently asked questions

Which functional groups matter most for the MCAT?

Alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, and amides come up most often in organic passages. Learn each group's structure, name, and typical reactivity together.

How many flashcards should I make for functional groups on the MCAT?

Aim for one card per functional group, plus a card for each property that separates it from look-alikes. Comparison cards, such as amine versus amide basicity, tend to be the most useful.

Can I export my functional groups flashcards?

Yes, but exports are a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV export, and the free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No, you can start without a credit card. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
