How to make GCSE heart flashcards from your revision material

Heart topics in GCSE biology come with a lot of labels to memorise, and GCSE heart flashcards make that job far quicker. Turn your own notes, slides or textbook photos into cards covering chambers, valves, blood vessels and the cardiac cycle.

  • Put one fact on each card, such as the job of a valve or the difference between an artery and a vein.
  • Use your exam board's own wording on the question side so the cards match the questions you will sit.
  • Draw the heart from memory and check it against your notes before you study the cards.
  • Review a small set of cards most days rather than cramming a whole topic the night before.
Example GCSE heart flashcards
Which chamber of the heart pumps blood to the whole body? The left ventricle, because it has the thickest muscular wall and pumps oxygenated blood out through the aorta.
What is the function of the valves in the heart? They stop blood flowing backwards, keeping it moving in one direction through the chambers.
Which blood vessel carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs? The pulmonary artery, which carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen.
What is the sinoatrial node? The natural pacemaker in the right atrium that starts each heartbeat with an electrical impulse.
Why do arteries have thicker walls than veins?Arteries carry blood at high pressure from the heart, so their thick elastic and muscular walls handle that pressure.

Built from your material

Upload your own PDF, DOCX, PPTX, notes or page photos, and the cards follow your exam board wording and diagrams.

Spaced repetition

Cards you find hard come back sooner, so chambers, valves and blood vessels stay in memory until the exam.

Study anywhere

Review cards in your browser on the free plan, or export to Anki and CSV on Plus.

How it works

Upload your heart notes

Add a PDF, slides, a Word file, plain notes or a photo of a page from your textbook.

Generate your flashcards

DeckOwl reads the text and creates question and answer cards on the heart topics it finds.

Review with spaced repetition

Study the cards in short sessions and let the schedule bring back the ones you miss.

Spaced repetition then brings each card back just before you are likely to forget it, so the route blood takes through the heart sticks rather than fading by the night before the exam. Keep each card to one fact so you can test yourself in short sessions.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for GCSE heart topics?

Aim for one card per fact rather than long paragraphs, so each chamber, valve and blood vessel gets its own card. The total depends on how much of the heart topic your specification covers.

What should go on a flashcard about the heart?

Write a short question on the front, such as which vessel carries blood to the lungs, and the answer on the back. Keep it to a single idea so you can recall it in a few seconds.

Can I export heart flashcards to Anki or CSV?

Yes, but exports are part of the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study flashcards in your browser with 3 generations per month.

Can I upload photos of my textbook pages?

Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so you can upload them alongside PDFs, DOCX, PPTX and plain notes.
