How to learn German noun genders with flashcards

Most German nouns have no rule that tells you their gender, so the article has to be learned along with the noun. German gender flashcards work well for this because each card pairs the word with der, die or das and asks you to recall it before you see the answer.

  • Put the article on the front of each card so you practice recalling it
  • Group nouns by ending, such as -chen (neuter) and -ung (feminine), to spot patterns
  • Study a small set of new nouns each day rather than one long session each week
  • Review the cards you miss more often than the ones you already know
Example German gender flashcards (der, die, das)
Tisch (table)der Tisch, masculine
Sonne (sun)die Sonne, feminine
Mädchen (girl)das Mädchen, neuter. Diminutives ending in -chen are always neuter.
Freiheit (freedom)die Freiheit, feminine. Nouns ending in -heit are always feminine.
Information (information)die Information, feminine. Nouns ending in -tion are always feminine.

Articles stay with the noun

Each card can show the noun with its der, die or das so you learn the article as part of the word.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know are spaced further apart.

Works from your own material

Use the nouns from your course, not a generic list, so you study the words your class actually uses.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, slides, plain notes or a photo of a vocab page.

Review the generated cards

Check the noun, article and meaning on each card and edit anything that looks off.

Study on a schedule

Work through the deck in the browser and let spaced repetition bring back the nouns you find hardest.

Start with the nouns from your current unit rather than the whole dictionary. Keep the article on the front of the card, say the full phrase out loud, and check your answer. Patterns help too: nouns ending in -chen are neuter, and nouns ending in -ung or -heit are feminine, so a short rule on the back of a card can save you guesses.

Free accounts can study generated cards in the browser, with 3 generations per month. Paid plans add unlimited generations and export to Anki or CSV if you want to keep studying in another app.

Frequently asked questions

How many German nouns should I put in one flashcard set?

Start with 20 to 30 nouns from one unit so the set is manageable. Once you can recall most of them, add the next unit's vocabulary.

Are there rules for predicting der, die or das?

Some endings are reliable, such as -chen and -lein (always neuter) and -heit, -keit, -ung and -tion (always feminine). Many other nouns have no rule, so learn those with their article.

Can I export German gender flashcards to Anki?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. The Plus plan at $99.90/year or $9.99/month includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, though exports are not included. No credit card is needed to start.
