How to study German nouns with flashcards

Learning German nouns means holding three things at once: gender, plural form and case endings. German noun flashcards keep all three attached to the word, so you practice der, die and das every time you review the noun.

  • Put gender on the front or back of each noun card so the article is learned with the word.
  • Group cards by pattern, such as -ung feminine nouns or -chen neuter nouns, and review them together.
  • Add one example sentence per noun that shows the accusative or dative form in use.
  • Review a short set every day rather than a long set once a week, since spacing is what makes the cards stick.
Example German noun flashcards by gender and case
Gender of 'das Mädchen' (girl)?Neuter, das. Diminutives ending in -chen are neuter regardless of meaning.
Gender of 'die Freiheit' (freedom)?Feminine, die. Nouns ending in -heit, -keit and -ung are feminine.
Plural of 'das Kind' (child)?die Kinder. Many neuter nouns form the plural with -er.
Accusative form of 'der Hund' in 'Ich sehe ___' (I see the dog)?den Hund. Masculine der changes to den in the accusative.
Dative form of 'der Tisch' in 'mit ___' (with the table)?mit dem Tisch. Masculine and neuter nouns take dem in the dative.

Gender on every card

Each noun card can show der, die or das, so you learn the article with the word instead of guessing it later.

Plurals and case forms

Generate cards for plural endings and accusative or dative forms, so you see nouns in the sentences where they actually appear.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know fade into longer intervals, so your review time goes to the nouns that need it.

How it works

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a textbook page. Photos are read with text recognition.

Generate noun flashcards

DeckOwl builds cards from the German nouns in your material. Check the cards and edit any that need changes.

Study in the browser

Review on the free plan with three generations a month. Plus adds unlimited generations and exports to Anki or CSV.

A useful card puts the noun in front and the article, plural and one example sentence on the back. Start with the gender patterns that cover many words, such as nouns ending in -ung, -heit and -keit being feminine, and diminutives ending in -chen being neuter. Then add cards for accusative and dative changes, which are where most learners slip.

Spaced repetition does the scheduling. Upload the vocabulary from your class each week, and the cards you keep missing will return more often than the ones you already know.

Frequently asked questions

How many German noun flashcards should I make for one unit?

Most learners do well with 20 to 40 nouns per session, grouped by theme or gender pattern. Smaller sets are easier to review daily, and spaced repetition will bring back the ones you miss.

Should I learn the plural together with the noun?

Yes, learning the plural with the noun saves time later and helps with irregular forms. Many German nouns have plural endings that are not predictable from the singular alone.

Is DeckOwl free to use?

Yes, the free plan gives you three generations per month and lets you study in the browser, with no credit card needed to start. Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of the Plus plan.

Can I export German noun flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Plus and Pro both include Anki export, so you can take your cards into the Anki app. Exports are not available on the free plan.
