How to study German verb conjugation with flashcards

Most German verb tables list six forms per tense, and drilling them as one block makes the pattern hard to see. German verb conjugation flashcards split each verb into single forms, so you practice ich, du, er and the rest one at a time.

  • Start with 10 to 15 high-frequency verbs such as sein, haben and werden before adding irregular ones.
  • Put the tense and person on the front of each card, such as Präteritum, er/sie/es.
  • Group regular stem-changing verbs together so the vowel shift is practiced as a pattern.
  • Add the Perfekt auxiliary to every verb card, since haben and sein are not interchangeable.
Example German verb conjugation flashcards (present and past)
sein, present tense, ich formich bin
haben, Präteritum, er/sie/es former/sie/es hatte
gehen, Perfektist gegangen · gehen is a verb of motion, so it takes sein
fahren, present tense, du formdu fährst · the a changes to ä in the du and er/sie/es forms
Future tense with werdenwerden in the present plus the infinitive at the end, e.g. ich werde lernen

How it works

Upload your verb list

Add a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of the page. Text recognition reads the tables for you.

Generate conjugation cards

DeckOwl creates cards with the verb and tense on the front and the correct form on the back.

Review on a schedule

Study in the browser on the free plan, and let spaced repetition bring back the forms you keep missing.

Irregular verbs such as sein, haben and werden need their own cards, while regular verbs with stem changes like fahren (du fährst, er fährt) are easier to group. Store the auxiliary for the Perfekt on the card too, because motion verbs like gehen take sein.

DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX and PPTX files, plain notes, and photos of a textbook page, then builds cards you can review with spaced repetition. Free study happens in the browser, while Anki and CSV export are on the Plus plan.

Frequently asked questions

How many German verbs should I put on conjugation flashcards at once?

Start with 10 to 15 high-frequency verbs such as sein, haben, werden and gehen. Add irregular verbs in small batches once those feel steady in review.

Which Perfekt auxiliary should I store on each German verb card?

Most verbs take haben, but verbs of motion and change of state such as gehen, fahren and werden take sein. Putting the auxiliary on the card helps you learn it with the verb rather than as a separate rule.

Can I export my German verb flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is part of the Plus plan at $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month and no credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
