Why a custom formula deck beats a generic list

Ready-made lists of formulas are easy to find, and many prep books include one, but the formulas you actually miss are usually the ones buried in your own practice sets. Making GRE math formula flashcards from those sources keeps the deck focused on the gaps you really have.

  • One card per formula, plus a card for each condition where it breaks down
  • Cards built from your own prep material, not a generic list
  • Reviews scheduled by spaced repetition so weak formulas return sooner
  • Photos of practice pages read with text recognition for quick entry
Example GRE math formula flashcards
Slope of a line through (x1, y1) and (x2, y2)?(y2 − y1) / (x2 − x1), the change in y divided by the change in x.
Quadratic formula for ax² + bx + c = 0?x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a, which gives both roots when the discriminant is nonnegative.
Sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic series?n(a₁ + aₙ) / 2, where n is the number of terms, a₁ is the first term and aₙ is the last.
Number of ways to choose r items from n when order does not matter?C(n, r) = n! / (r!(n − r)!), the combinations formula, which is smaller than the permutations count.
Distance traveled given rate and time?Distance = rate × time, so rearrange to find time or rate when the other two values are known.

Cards from your own material

Drop in the chapter PDF or handwritten notes you already study from, and get flashcards built from those exact formulas.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know come back later, so formulas move from recognition to recall.

Photos work too

Snap a page of worked problems or a formula sheet and text recognition reads it into cards you can edit.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, slides, plain notes or a photo of a page covering the formulas you need.

Generate the deck

DeckOwl pulls out formulas, key definitions and conditions for use, and turns each into a front and back card.

Review on a schedule

Study in the browser each day. Missed formulas return more often until they stick.

Memorizing a formula is different from recognizing it on test day. Spaced repetition shows each card just before you would forget it, which is where most of the retention comes from. Start with area, volume, slope and the quadratic formula, then add the counting and rate formulas you keep second-guessing.

Keep each card to one idea. A formula on the front and its conditions on the back, such as when a sum formula applies or which variable is the number of terms, makes the card useful rather than a memory test of the wording.

Frequently asked questions

Which GRE math formulas should I memorize first?

Start with the ones that appear across many questions, such as area and volume, slope and line equations, the quadratic formula, and percent change. Then add counting formulas like combinations and permutations, which are easy to confuse. Check your own practice sets to see which formulas you miss most.

How many formula flashcards should I make before the GRE?

There is no fixed number that fits everyone. Make one card for each formula you use, and add a separate card for each condition or variant you tend to mix up. Keep reviewing the deck until the cards you miss become rare.

Can I export my formula flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included in the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser with 3 generations per month and no exports.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students with a school email get 40% off paid plans.
