Learn how to add decks to your Anki app in minutes
Create an empty deck, import a shared file, or move cards between decks. Then skip the manual typing by generating flashcards from your own notes.
Adding decks to Anki, and where generated cards fit in
Most people hit a snag on their first day in Anki, so here is the short version of how to add decks to Anki app: create an empty deck with Create Deck, import a shared .apkg file, or move existing cards into a new deck from the Browser.
- Create a deck from the main window with Create Deck, then add notes to it from the Add window.
- Use the Deck field in the Add window to choose where each new note is saved.
- Shared decks usually arrive as .apkg files, which open directly in Anki or import through File > Import.
- Use the Browser to select cards and press Change Deck to move them to another deck.
Upload almost any study file
Send PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or photos of pages. Text in images is read with text recognition.
Spaced repetition built in
Flashcards are scheduled for review at increasing intervals, so you spend time on the cards you are about to forget.
Export to Anki on Plus
The Plus plan includes export to Anki, so your generated cards can go straight into the decks you already study with.
How it works
Upload your material
Add a PDF, slides, notes, or a photo of a textbook page to DeckOwl.
Generate flashcards
DeckOwl creates flashcards from the content, which you can review and edit in the browser.
Export to Anki
On Plus, export the deck as a file and import it into Anki using File > Import.
Building cards by hand is the slow part. DeckOwl can turn your own PDFs, slides, or notes into flashcards with spaced repetition, and on the Plus plan you can export them to Anki as a file you import into the deck you already use.
Free accounts get 3 generations per month and can study in the browser, but exports are part of the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. Students get 40% off with a school email, and no credit card is needed to start.
