Make flashcards with paper, or generate them from your own notes

Index cards work well for a small set. When your material runs to dozens of pages, DeckOwl builds the cards from your own files and schedules them for review.

Paper flashcards versus generated ones

Index cards still work: write a question on one side, the answer on the other, and shuffle the stack before each session. Knowing how to make flashcards with paper is a useful fallback when you have no devices nearby.

  • Write one fact per card so each answer is short enough to recall in a few seconds.
  • Put the question or term on the front and the answer on the back, not a paragraph.
  • Shuffle the stack and test yourself before flipping the card over.
  • Sort missed cards into a separate pile and review them again the same day.
Example flashcards for reading a research paper
What is the purpose of the abstract in a research paper? It summarizes the question, methods, key results, and conclusion so readers can decide whether to read the full paper.
What is a control group?A group that does not receive the treatment being tested, used as a baseline for comparison.
What does a p-value measure? The probability of seeing results at least as extreme as the observed ones if the null hypothesis were true.
How does a sample differ from a population? The sample is the subset of people or items actually studied; the population is the full group the findings are meant to describe.
Why do researchers report confidence intervals? They show a range of plausible values for an estimate, which conveys precision better than a single number.

Cards from your files

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or a photo of a page and get flashcards drawn from that material.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back at growing intervals so you spend time on what you are about to forget.

Export when you need it

Plus plans export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, so you can print a paper set later if you want one.

How it works

Gather your material

Collect the chapter, lecture slides, or notes you need to memorize, and take a clear photo of any printed pages.

Upload and generate

Drop the file into DeckOwl and get a first set of question-and-answer flashcards without writing them by hand.

Review and trim

Study in the browser, mark what you missed, and let spaced repetition bring those cards back first.

The trade-off is time. Copying a forty-page chapter onto cards can take longer than studying it, and a stack of paper gives you no way to know which cards are due. A generator reads your own material, writes the cards, and tracks review dates for you.

Keep the method that works for you. Many students write a few cards by hand for a tricky concept and generate the rest from their notes.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for a research paper?

Aim for one card per key term, claim, method detail, or result, which usually comes to 10 to 20 cards for a single paper. Keep each card to one idea so you can answer it in a few seconds.

Can I make flashcards from a PDF of a research paper?

Yes. Upload the PDF, DOCX, PPTX, notes, or a photo of a page, and DeckOwl generates flashcards you can review with spaced repetition. The free plan includes 3 generations per month.

What should go on the front of a flashcard?

Put a specific question or term on the front, such as what a p-value measures, so you have to recall the answer rather than recognize it. Vague prompts like the study of a paper make weak cards.

Can I export my flashcards to paper or Anki?

Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of the Plus plan, which costs $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.
