What makes an Anki card work

Most weak Anki decks share one problem: each card asks for too much. Learning how to make good Anki cards starts with a simple rule, which is that each card should test one fact, one term, or one step, so a single review gives you a clear answer to check.

  • Test one fact per card and split multi-part answers into linked cards.
  • Write questions with a single clear answer, not open-ended prompts.
  • Keep answers to a word or short phrase where possible.
  • Add a cloze or context line only when the fact would be ambiguous without it.
Example intro biology Anki cards (a common study topic)
What does one turn of the Krebs cycle produce per acetyl-CoA?3 NADH, 1 FADH2, 1 GTP (or ATP), and 2 CO2.
Where does oxidative phosphorylation take place in eukaryotic cells? On the inner mitochondrial membrane, using the electron transport chain and ATP synthase.
How does the chromosome number of daughter cells from mitosis compare with meiosis?Mitosis produces two diploid cells; meiosis produces four haploid gametes.
What is osmosis? The net movement of water across a semipermeable membrane toward the side with higher solute concentration.
What is the role of RuBisCO in the Calvin cycle? It catalyzes the first step of carbon fixation, attaching CO2 to RuBP.

Cards from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or a photo of a page and get a first set of flashcards drawn from what you actually need to learn.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back at growing intervals so you review material right before you would otherwise forget it.

Anki export on Plus

Plus includes Anki export, so you can move cards into your existing decks after you check and edit them.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slides, text, or a photo of the page you are studying. Text recognition reads images.

Review and edit the draft

Split long answers, cut anything you would not need to recall, and rewrite vague questions into specific ones.

Study on a schedule

Use spaced repetition to review each card at the intervals it sets, and export to Anki when you want those cards in your own deck.

Good cards also use specific prompts. A question like "Explain photosynthesis" invites a vague answer you can never grade honestly, while "What molecule does RuBisco attach CO2 to?" has one right response. Keep answers short enough to recall in a few seconds, and write the card in your own words so you are retrieving meaning rather than matching a sentence you memorized.

Frequently asked questions

How many facts should go on one Anki card?

One. If an answer has several parts, such as the three products of a cycle, split them into separate cards so each review checks one clear recall target.

How long should a flashcard answer be?

Short enough to recall and check in a few seconds, usually a word or a single phrase. Longer explanations belong in your notes, not on the card.

Can DeckOwl export cards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included on the Plus plan at $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The free plan lets you study cards in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month, and students get 40% off with a school email.
