Making your own preschool number cards

Most preschool number cards pair a numeral with the matching amount of objects, so a child sees that 3 means three things. To make number flashcards for preschoolers yourself, start with a counting chart, a photo of a worksheet or a list of numbers you want to practice, then turn that material into cards. Upload a PDF, slides, notes or an image, and DeckOwl reads the text and builds flashcards from it.

  • Start with numbers 1 to 5, then extend to 10
  • Pair each numeral with a picture of that many objects
  • Say each number aloud and count together
  • Review missed numbers again the next day
Example number flashcards for preschoolers
What number comes right after 7?8. Count on from 7 by adding one more object to the group.
Which is more: 5 or 3?5. Line up five blocks beside three blocks so the longer row shows it.
Show the number 2 on your fingers.Hold up two fingers while saying two, pointing to each finger as you count.
You have 2 apples and get 3 more. How many apples now?5. Count all the apples together, starting again from 1.
What number comes between 4 and 6?5. Use a number line to see that there is one space between them.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a counting chart, a worksheet photo or a list of the numbers you want to teach.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl reads the text and turns it into flashcards with a number on one side and its meaning on the other.

Study and review

Practice a few cards at a time, and let spaced repetition bring back the ones that need more work.

Keep each session short, with only a handful of cards, and have your child say each number aloud before you flip the card. Review the same cards again the next day, since spacing out practice helps the numbers stick. Over a few weeks you can add larger numbers as your child becomes comfortable with the earlier ones.

Frequently asked questions

What range of numbers should preschool flashcards cover?

Many early number activities begin with 1 to 5 and then extend to 10, since children usually learn small quantities first. Move to larger numbers once your child names small sets quickly and accurately.

How long should a preschool number flashcard session last?

Short sessions work best, often just a few cards at a time for a child this age. Keeping practice brief and playful helps them stay focused and interested.

Can I export my number flashcards to Anki or PDF?

Yes, but exports are a paid feature. The free plan includes browser study, while paid plans add PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No, you can start without a credit card. Students also get 40% off with a school email.
