Turn your notes, slides and page photos into online flashcards
Upload the labeled diagram, slide deck or photo you already have. DeckOwl reads the text in it and builds flashcards you can review with spaced repetition.
Making picture-based flashcards from your own material
Pictures help many students remember where things are, but a card that only shows an image gives you little to recall. The practical way to make online flashcards with pictures is to start from the labeled diagram or slide you already own, then turn its labels and captions into question-and-answer cards.
- Photograph or upload the labeled page, slide or figure
- Check that labels and captions are legible before uploading
- Keep one fact per card so each review tests one answer
- Review the set in the browser and export to Anki on Plus
Works from what you already have
Upload PDFs, DOCX files, PowerPoint slides, plain text notes or images. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so legible text in them can become cards.
Spaced repetition built in
Cards return at increasing intervals, so your study time goes to the ones you are about to forget.
Study in the browser
Review from any browser with no install. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study.
How it works
Capture the page
Take a clear photo of the labeled page or upload the slide deck that contains the diagram.
Generate the cards
Upload the file or image and DeckOwl creates flashcards from the text it finds.
Review and export
Study in the browser on the Free plan, or upgrade to Plus to export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV.
DeckOwl accepts PDFs, DOCX and PPTX files, plain text notes, and images. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so legible text in a photo, such as a figure caption or a list of labels, can become card content. Clear, well-lit photos produce better cards than blurry ones.
Keep each card to one fact. A label like left ventricle can become a card asking which chamber pumps blood to the body, rather than a card that tries to cover the whole heart. Review the generated set, delete anything unclear, and study the rest with spaced repetition.

Frequently asked questions
How many flashcards should I make from one diagram?
Make one card per label or relationship instead of one card per diagram, so each card tests a single fact. A diagram with a few dozen labeled parts usually becomes a set you can review in short daily sessions.
Is it better to name labels from memory or pick them from the picture?
Recall is usually stronger, so cover the labels and name each part before you check. Spaced repetition then brings back the parts you miss at increasing intervals.
Can DeckOwl read text in photos of my notes?
Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so legible text in them can become flashcard content. Blurry or cropped photos produce weaker cards.
Can I export these flashcards to Anki?
Export to Anki is a Plus feature, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month and also includes PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser.
