Making flashcards from your own notes

Typing flashcards out by hand from lecture notes takes time you could spend actually studying. Making Quizlet-style flashcards from your notes is faster when the tool reads the material for you and proposes the question-and-answer pairs.

  • Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages
  • Get flashcards with a clear front and back for each concept
  • Review with spaced repetition so weak cards return sooner
  • Export to Anki, CSV, PDF or DOCX on paid plans
Example acids and bases flashcards
What is the pH of a neutral solution at 25 degrees Celsius?7. Pure water has equal hydrogen and hydroxide ion concentrations, so it is neither acidic nor basic.
What is a Brønsted-Lowry acid?A proton (H+) donor. Its conjugate base is what remains after it gives up that proton.
Which common strong acid dissociates completely in water?Hydrochloric acid (HCl). Because it fully ionizes, the hydrogen ion concentration equals its molarity.
What is the relationship between pH and pOH at 25 degrees Celsius?pH + pOH = 14, because the ion product of water is 1.0 × 10^-14 at that temperature.
What is a conjugate base? The species left after an acid donates a proton. Acetate is the conjugate base of acetic acid.

Works from what you already have

Paste notes, upload a DOCX or PPTX, or snap a photo of a handout. Text recognition reads the page so you do not retype anything.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know fade out. You study the weak spots instead of rereading the whole set.

Study in the browser for free

The free plan gives you 3 generations a month with no card required. Paid plans add unlimited generations and exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV.

How it works

Add your notes

Upload a PDF, slides, a document, plain text or a photo of your notes. Use the material from your own class.

Generate the flashcards

DeckOwl pulls out terms and questions and writes a front and back for each card. Edit any card that needs a clearer answer.

Review with spaced repetition

Study in the browser on a schedule that brings back the cards you are about to forget. Export to Anki or CSV if you want them elsewhere.

Good cards are short and specific. One card should test one fact, such as a definition, a formula or a cause and effect, so you can tell right away whether you knew it. Check the generated cards against your notes, delete any that are vague, and add a card for each concept your instructor stressed.

Spaced repetition does the rest. Reviewing a card just before you would forget it builds memory far better than cramming the whole set the night before an exam.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for an acids and bases unit?

Aim for one card per definition, formula and named example, which usually lands between 25 and 40 cards for a single unit. Add more cards for any concept your instructor tested on last time.

What is the best way to memorize the pH and pOH relationships?

Write the equations on one side of a card and the values at 25 degrees Celsius on the other, then review them with spaced repetition. Practice converting between pH and [H+] until you can do it without looking at the card.

Can I export my flashcards to Anki or a spreadsheet?

Yes, on the Plus and Pro plans you can export to Anki and CSV, and to PDF and DOCX for printing. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, and students with a school email get 40 percent off a paid plan.
