What makes a good Spanish flashcard

If you want to learn how to make Spanish flashcards that actually stick, start with the material your class already gives you. A vocabulary list, a unit's dialogue or a page of verb conjugations already holds the words you need, so the real work is choosing what to keep.

  • Put the Spanish word or phrase on the front and the English meaning on the back, then reverse the cards once recall gets stronger.
  • Make separate cards for irregular preterite forms such as fui, fue and fueron.
  • Add gender to every noun and note exceptions such as la mano.
  • Study for a few minutes daily instead of one long session the night before a test.
Example beginner Spanish flashcards
¿Cómo estás? (informal)How are you? Used with one person you know well.
tener que + infinitiveTo have to do something, as in Tengo que estudiar (I have to study).
el libro / la mesaGender: nouns ending in -o are usually masculine and nouns ending in -a are usually feminine, with exceptions like la mano.
Preterite of ir, yo formfui (I went). The same form is used for ser, so context decides the meaning.
gustar with meMe gusta el café means I like coffee. The verb agrees with café, the thing liked, not with the person.

Works with your material

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or photos of pages. Photos are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back at the intervals your memory needs, so verb forms and vocabulary stay in long-term memory.

Export when you need it

Plus exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, so your Spanish deck can move to another app.

How it works

Upload your Spanish material

Add a vocab list, lesson slides, notes or a photo of a textbook page.

Generate and review the cards

DeckOwl builds flashcards from the content. Check the fronts and backs and edit anything that looks off.

Study on a spaced schedule

Review cards daily in the browser. Hard cards come back sooner and easy ones less often.

Keep one idea per card. Put a single word, phrase or verb form on the front, and the meaning or conjugation on the back. Include gender for nouns, such as el libro or la mesa, and add a short example sentence so the word appears in context.

Review in short, frequent sessions rather than one long cram before a test. Spaced repetition handles the timing, so your minutes go to the cards you are most likely to forget.

Frequently asked questions

Should Spanish flashcards have Spanish or English on the front?

Start with Spanish on the front and English on the back so you practice recalling the meaning. Once recall is reliable, flip some cards to practice producing Spanish from English.

How many flashcards should I make for a Spanish unit?

The number matters less than keeping each card focused on one idea. Add new cards as vocabulary appears in class, and drop any that you already know well.

Can I export my Spanish flashcards to Anki?

Yes, the Plus plan includes export to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Is there a free way to try it?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students get 40% off Plus with a school email.
