Print flashcards at home from your own notes and PDFs

Blank card templates are easy to find. The harder part is writing good questions. DeckOwl reads your slides, notes, PDFs or photos and drafts the flashcards for you, then exports them as a PDF on Plus.

Why printed flashcards still work

Most people who want to print flashcards at home already have the material, just not the cards. Ready-made printable sheets cover generic topics, but they rarely match the lecture slides or chapter your class is using.

  • Use cardstock or index stock, which is heavier than standard printer paper and resists curling.
  • Print a test page on plain paper before using your good paper to check margins and alignment.
  • For double-sided cards, print on a setting that flips on the short edge and check that the answers line up.
  • Cut along the guide lines with a paper trimmer or a ruler and craft knife for even edges.
Example printable flashcards for home study
Why use cardstock instead of plain paper for flashcards?Cardstock resists curling and tearing when you flip cards many times, and it hides text bleed-through on double-sided cards.
How do you keep front and back aligned on double-sided printing?Print a test page first, choose the setting that flips on the short edge, and hold the sheet up to a light to check the alignment.
What is the easiest way to cut many cards evenly?Cut along the printed guide lines using a paper trimmer, or a ruler and craft knife on a cutting mat, so every card is the same size.
Should flashcards be printed in color?Black text on white is easy to read and enough for most study, while color is useful only if you consistently use it to group topics.
Why print a practice page on plain paper first? It checks the size, margins and alignment of the layout so you do not waste cardstock or ink on a set that needs adjusting.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page and get flashcards drawn from what you actually need to learn.

Print-ready PDF export

The Plus plan exports your flashcard set as a PDF, so you can print it on your home printer and cut it out.

Spaced repetition on screen

Study the same cards in the browser or export to Anki, so printed cards and digital review can work together.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add the PDF, slides, document or photo that you want to study from.

Review the generated cards

Check the questions and answers, edit anything that looks off, and remove cards you do not need.

Export and print at home

On Plus, export the set as a PDF, print a test page on plain paper, then print the full set on cardstock.

Generating the cards from your own file keeps the content aligned with your course. Print a practice page first to check size and margins, then move to heavier paper for the final set. Shuffle the printed cards, and set aside the ones you get right so you spend more time on the hard ones.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I put on one printed page?

Most people fit between six and twelve cards per page so the text stays readable and easy to cut. Start with a larger layout and shrink it if the cards feel cramped.

How should I study printed flashcards?

Read the question aloud, answer before you flip the card, and check yourself. Put the cards you miss back in the pile and review them again sooner than the ones you know well.

Can I export flashcards as a PDF for printing?

Yes, PDF export is included on the Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser, but it does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month, and students get 40% off with a school email.
