Moving a deck between flashcard apps

If you are importing an Anki deck into Quizlet, you are usually switching tools mid-semester and want your cards to come along intact. DeckOwl does not read .apkg files, so the cleanest route is a plain-text export from Anki, pasted into Quizlet's import box. Anki's review history does not travel with a text export, so the cards start a new schedule. Images are also left behind because Anki stores them as separate media files.

  • Anki's plain-text export keeps the front and back of each card on one line.
  • Images in an Anki deck are stored as media files and need to be added back by hand.
  • Scheduling history stays in Anki, so review intervals restart in the new app.
  • DeckOwl generates new cards from PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text or images.
Example Anki-to-Quizlet card formats and export tips
What separator does Anki's Notes in Plain Text export use between fields?A tab character by default, which keeps each card's front and back in separate fields.
Why can stray HTML tags appear after an Anki text export?Fields can contain formatting markup, so clear the Include HTML and media references option in the export dialog before importing.
What happens to images from an Anki deck in a text export? The picture itself is dropped from the text file, so the media must be added back to the new set by hand.
Why do review intervals reset after moving a deck to another app?Scheduling data is stored by Anki and is not part of a plain-text file, so each card begins a new review schedule.
What is a good check before importing a large set?Import a sample of 10 cards first and confirm each term lines up with its matching definition.

Paste-ready text export

Anki can export notes as plain text with one card per line, which you can paste into Quizlet's import box.

Fresh flashcards from your notes

Upload a PDF, slides, a DOCX or a photo of your notes and get flashcards with spaced repetition.

Export when you need it

Plus adds Anki and CSV export, so cards you create in DeckOwl can move to other apps too.

How it works

Export from Anki

In Anki, open the deck, choose Export, and pick Notes in Plain Text so each card lands on its own line.

Check the separators

Confirm the field separator is a tab, then open a new set in Quizlet and use its import option to paste the text.

Or rebuild in DeckOwl

Upload your source material to generate new flashcards, then review them with spaced repetition in your browser.

If the original material is still available, it is often faster to rebuild the set from the source. Upload the PDF, slides, notes or photos of pages to DeckOwl, and it generates flashcards you can study in the browser with spaced repetition. The Plus plan lets you export them to Anki or CSV later if you want them in another app.

Frequently asked questions

Can DeckOwl import an Anki .apkg file directly?

No. DeckOwl does not import Anki packages, so export the deck as plain text from Anki or generate new cards from your source material.

Does Quizlet accept a tab-separated Anki export?

Quizlet lets you choose how the term and definition are separated, and a tab is a common choice for a copied Anki export. Check the preview before you save the set.

How many flashcards should I keep when moving a deck?

Trim duplicates and cards you no longer need before moving the deck, so the new set is easier to review. Start with the cards you still miss most often.

Do exports from DeckOwl cost money?

Yes. Anki and CSV exports are included on the Plus plan at $99.90/year or $9.99/month, while the Free plan lets you study in the browser only.
