How to decide whether a deck is worth using

Whether Anki decks are good depends on whether the cards match what your course actually tests. A deck built for a different textbook or a different year can teach correct facts that you never need, while missing the terms your exam uses.

  • Shared decks may cover material outside your course.
  • Your own cards use your instructor's vocabulary.
  • Editing a generated set takes less time than writing one from scratch.
  • Spaced repetition works best when cards reflect what you are actually studying.
Example cell biology flashcards (general study topic)
Which organelle produces most of a cell's ATP?Mitochondria, through cellular respiration.
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus? It modifies, sorts and packages proteins and lipids for transport.
What is osmosis? The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from low solute concentration to high solute concentration.
How do mitosis and meiosis differ?Mitosis produces two genetically identical diploid cells, while meiosis produces four genetically varied haploid cells.
What does the hydrophobic core of a phospholipid bilayer do?It blocks passage of water-soluble molecules and ions, controlling what enters the cell.

Matched to your material

Cards come from your PDFs, slides, notes or photos of pages, so they reflect your instructor's terms and examples.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss return sooner, and cards you know fade into longer intervals without manual scheduling.

Export when you need it

On Plus, export to Anki, CSV, PDF or DOCX and keep your decks wherever you study.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or an image of a page.

Review the generated cards

Delete anything off-topic, edit wording and keep the cards that match your course.

Study on a schedule

Review daily and let spaced repetition bring back the cards you find hardest.

Your own material is the most reliable test. Generating flashcards from your lecture slides or notes gives you a deck aligned with your syllabus, and you can still export to Anki if you prefer that app's review interface.

A practical check is to sample five or six cards from any shared deck and look them up in your notes. If most of them are not covered, build your own set instead.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for a cell biology unit?

Start with one card per distinct term or process, then remove cards you answer correctly every time. A focused set covering one unit is usually much smaller than a general shared deck.

Why does spaced repetition work better than rereading notes?

Reviewing material just before you would forget it strengthens recall more than rereading it in one sitting. Missed cards come back sooner, which keeps your effort on the material you need most.

Can I export my cards to Anki?

Yes, the Plus plan includes exports to Anki, along with CSV, PDF and DOCX. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Should I check a shared deck against my own notes?

Yes. Shared decks often include material your instructor never assigned, so compare each card with your lecture slides before relying on it.
