Why custom hiragana cards beat a generic printable sheet

Printable Japanese hiragana flash cards are easy to find, but a generic sheet rarely matches the kana order your class uses or the examples your teacher gave. DeckOwl takes a different route: upload your own hiragana chart, worksheet or notes, and it generates printable Japanese hiragana flash cards from that material.

  • Upload a photo of a hiragana chart and text recognition reads the characters.
  • Group cards by row, such as the ka row or the sa row, to learn in manageable sets.
  • Add dakuten and combined sounds like ga or kya as separate cards once the basics feel steady.
  • Check every generated card against your textbook before printing.
Example hiragana flashcards for beginners
あa, the first vowel of the gojuon chart
しshi, not si, in the sa row
つtsu, which is written like a small tsu in the ta row
ふfu, a sound closer to a soft f with lips barely touching
んn, the only hiragana that stands alone as a consonant sound

Your material, your cards

Upload a photo of a hiragana chart, a PDF worksheet or typed notes and get flashcards built from exactly what you are studying.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so the rows you struggle with get more practice than the ones you already know.

Study or print

Study in the browser on the free plan. Plus adds PDF export for printing, along with DOCX, Anki and CSV.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, slides, plain text or a photo of your hiragana chart.

Review the cards

Check the generated flashcards and edit any that do not match your textbook.

Study or export

Study in the browser for free, or export a PDF to print on the Plus plan.

We do not offer a free download library of pre-made sheets. The free plan lets you generate three sets a month and study them in the browser. Printing to PDF is part of Plus, which also removes the monthly generation limit.

For learning the syllabary, work in small batches: a row or two of kana per session, then review the cards the next day. Repetition spread over several days beats one long cram.

Frequently asked questions

What hiragana should I learn first?

Most beginners start with the vowels and the k, s, t, n, h, m, y, r and w rows, then add the voiced and combination sounds. Your course order is the best guide, so generate your cards from that list.

How many hiragana should I study per session?

Five to ten new characters per session works well for many learners, with a short review of older cards each day. Consistent daily practice matters more than long sessions.

Is there a free printable PDF of hiragana flashcards?

DeckOwl does not host a free download library. The free plan includes three generations a month and browser study, while PDF export of your own material is part of Plus.

Does the Plus plan include Anki export?

Yes, Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export along with unlimited generations and spaced repetition. Students with a school email get 40% off.
