How to learn French with online flashcards

Vocabulary and verb endings are where most beginner French stalls, and online flashcards to learn French are one of the most direct ways to drill both. Repetition does the work, so short daily sessions usually beat one long weekend cram.

  • Start with 20 to 30 high-frequency words and phrases before moving to longer lists.
  • Include gender with every noun, since le and la change the article and often the adjective.
  • Drill verb conjugations in small groups, such as present tense of avoir and être, before mixing tenses.
  • Say each card out loud before flipping it, so pronunciation practice happens with the memory work.
Example beginner French flashcards
BonjourHello or good day, used as a greeting at any time of day
Je suisI am (from être, first person singular)
Le chatThe cat; chat is masculine, so it takes le
Gender of la table?Feminine, so it takes la: la table means the table
Merci beaucoupThank you very much

Built from your material

Feed in your course PDFs, DOCX handouts, PowerPoint slides, typed notes or photos of a textbook page, and get cards that match what your teacher actually covers.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know fade into longer gaps, so French words move into long-term memory instead of being crammed once.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you study on any device with a browser. Plus adds export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV for printing or other apps.

How it works

Upload your French material

Drop in a vocabulary list, a lesson PDF, a slide deck or a photo of your notes. Text recognition reads photos of pages.

Generate and review the cards

Get flashcards with the French term or phrase on the front and the meaning on the back. Check them and remove anything you do not need.

Study a few minutes every day

Open your deck in the browser and review. Spaced repetition schedules the cards you are most likely to forget.

Good cards are narrow. Put one word, one phrase or one conjugation pattern on each card, and include the article for nouns so that le, la and les stick with the word. For grammar, the front can show a pattern such as the present tense of être, and the back can list the full forms.

Upload the material your class already uses, such as vocabulary lists, lesson PDFs or photos of your textbook, so the cards match what you will be tested on. Review the generated cards once before you start, then let spaced repetition bring back the ones you miss.

Frequently asked questions

How many new French words should I learn each day with flashcards?

Most beginners find 10 to 20 new words a day manageable, as long as they also review older cards. Consistency over several weeks matters more than the daily count.

Are flashcards good for learning French verb conjugations?

Yes, for conjugation tables and gender rules, as long as each card targets one pattern. Put the verb and tense on the front and the full set of forms on the back.

Can I export my French flashcards to Anki or a PDF?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. Plus ($39/year or $7.99/month) includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, while the free plan is limited to studying in the browser.

Is there a free plan, and do I need a credit card to start?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study. You do not need a credit card to start, and students get 40% off with a school email.
